a lone litany of neglected duties, or
imposition s on parents by children
whom they should have governed
with something sterner than charming
and unenforced preachments.
When a young boy speaks of his
father as "father" you can rest as
sured that boy's father ruled he
home with respect and proper
sterness. When he calls him "daddy"
vou could almost see the two of them
doing something in common, as chums,
the boy looking up to his father lor
oiiiflance. and the father looking upon
his son or daughter as priceless objects
submitted to his care whom he seeks
to rule by the dictates of a loving and
interested heart. .
To persons of proper breeding the
term "Old Man" is nauseating. The

lution that smells bad,

When a son or daughter refers to
his or her father as the "Old Man,"
you can gamble on the fact that that
son or daughter has no adequate con
ception of what the relation of father
and son implies, and is woefully want
ing in ordinary respect to the parent
who is responsible for his or her ex
istence. It would not be stretching the im
agination to assert that a son guilty
of so great a breach of love and re
spect, will some day entirely ignore
the wishes or the needs of one en
titled to respect and maybe, aid in
time of need. That such a child is
wanting in the very things that make
family life the cornerstone of the na
tion's greatness, need not be assert
ed. It is a fact which the dullest is
capable of reasoning out.
But it would not do to lay the blame
. entirely on the shoulders of this son
or daughter. Proper appelations come
with proper training and the use of
terms that indicate a lack of due re
spect as does this term "Old Man,"
' .'

A program of music will take the
entire time of the evening service at
the Methodist church Sunday evening.
This is the second of a series of all
music programs there this winter. The
public is invited, pews free. The
vested juvenile choir will assist in the
program. Some of the best talent
in the city, will appear.

A land contest case was scheduled
for hearing in the receiver's office this
morning at 10:00 a. m. Robert N.
Beach of North Powder is contesting
a desert entry made by Dr. C. H.
Law, of Union, and claims that while
the land was properly entered upon
as desert land and that all of the
proceedings were proper, the land is
not desert land. Cochran & Eberhard
represent the plaintiff and James Slat
er the defendant.
Mrs. Frank Bramwell has been in a
critical condition for the last two days.
The baby born on the 7th instant is
