;5, . THURSDAY, MARCH 11, 1914. LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER i SPRING SPRAY ORDERS AND INSTRUCTIONS SENT BY C. C. CATE. (County Farm Expert.) ' Apple scab, a fungous disease that attacks the foilage and fruit of the appletree, made its appearance in Un ion county several years ago but has never caused serious damage until recent years. It has gradually spread over the county, until at the present time its serious effects can be noticed 1 in almost every apple growing dis trict of the Grand Ronde valley . Apple scab is recognized as the most serious and most generally dis tributed fungous disease of the apple known, and is particularly severe in many of the apple districts of the northwest. And on this account we deem it advisable at this time to issue a word of warning to the apple grow ers of the Grand Ronde valley. Upon investigation it is learned that many of the growers have had little if an- experience in regard to scab con- 1 trol by means of spraying. Last season, by mutual consent of the various selling agencies or organ izations of Oregon, apples slightly in fected with scab were permitted to be shipped outside the state, but such practice, if attempted this season, will cause havoc with the apple industry of Oregon for this reason: Growers of other apple districts in other states feel that such practice is an injustice and a gross discrimination against their respective districts, and have threatened to quarantine the Oregon apple. If the quarantine is establish ed I will not undertake to furnish figures indicative of the loss that will be sustained by the Oregon growers. And futhermore, the warning has been issued by the State Board of prevention of scab when trees aie dormant unless scale and other in sects are serious, save dormant spray and follow above directions. Horticulture that scab infected fruit shall not be nermitted on the market or prepared for -shipment out of the state or to various points within the state. Therefore it behooves the fruit grower, who expects to dispose of his crop, outside of the cannery or evap orator, to take steps now, to prevent this troublesome disease. Treatment. The method of treatment must be preventive rather than curative. For merly, bordeaux mixture, (bluestone and lime) a fungicide was used al most exclusively as a preventive of scab, but its use has been supplanted to a greater or less extent by lime sulphur solution, on account of the russeting. of the fruit by bordeaux, which was considered almost as det rimental as scab. There should be two and preferably three, applications. First, should be made when the blos som buds separate in the cluster, and show a good pink color. Use either bordeaux or lime a sulphur for the first spray. If bordeaux is desired, use four lbs bluestone, four lbs lime, to fifty gallons of water. If lime sul phur is used, taken the standard stock solution (30 degrees baume) di lute one nart to 30 parts water, with either mixture or solution, be sure 10 cover trees thoroughly. Second application: Use lim sul phur, diluted 1 to 35 and add two lb?, arsenate of lead to fifty gallon of diluted solution. Appl yas for calyx spray for codling moth. This is known as combination spray for scab and moth. Third application: Use same ma terial as second spray, and apply as second codling moth spray. Note: It is useless to spray for OUT nous FILMS PICTURES FROM AFRICAN JUNG LES INDEED THRILLING.
