Alaska Eggs, Hatched at Bonneville, Used to Replenish Lake. Anglers will learn with delight that the state game and fish department car, the "Rainbow," passed through the city today on its way to Wallowa lake, where 177,000 Sockeye and Blue Backs, a specie of the Yank, will be iiuc-Bieu in mat uuuy oi water, ine car was irtycharge of T. This specie of fish have threatened to become exinct in Wallowa lake and the state has made special effort to ob tain eggs for hatching to replant the lake. The eggs came from Alaska and were hatched in the Bonneville hatchery near Portland. In speaking of the efforts of the state to replant all of the streams of the state, Mr.' Craig said: "It will be interesting for the sportsmen of this section to learn that about May 1 we will be back in your city with several consignments of email fish to stock all of the streams of Union and Wallowa counties. Eastern Brook are now hatching and will be ready for distribution by the date mention- ed. Rainbow and Eastern Brook do especially well in this high altitude and a large consignment of eggs from Colorado are hatching and are in tended for this region. Last year we distributed about" two million fish in Davis Lake and while some of them never reach maturity, the greater por tion will in two years measure from ten to fourteen inches in length and will be fine fish. ' "Hatching during the winter months is slower than in summer taking from 50 to 60 days while in the warmer portlbn of the year hatching is com plete in 30 to 35 days. Next Monday I will be through with another con signment of small fish for Wallowa lake which will make the total 354, 000 for that body of water alone." , Mr. Craig then showed the construc tion of this special car. On either side of the car parallel witj. its sides are two air pipes running from an air pumping station in the end of the car. These pipes are about two inches in diameter. About a foot apart are air cocks leading off through rubber tubes which are inserted into the can and' supply the water with the neces sary air to keep the fish alive. Be fore this car was arranged all of this work had to be done by hand and consisted in stirring the water with a dipper Mr. Craig spoke of the deputy game warden who hadbeen recently dis charged and said that most of them would be reinstated.
