Elgin City fathers in their graved dig nity conducted the city caucus, in the city hall opera house Saturday even ing. Things were rather warm during the entire caucus. The following were the people nominated to run on the official ballot: Mayor L. Denham, Arthur Hall garth. Councilmen (Three to be elected.) J. W. Leighton, Geo. Garret, Wm. Winn, F. A. Bills, Lora Becker, Mrs. H. H. Weatherspoon, Myrtle Steven son, Robert Blumemtain. Recorder. Jesse Crum, Geo. H. Flagg. City Treasurer. R. L. Shoemaker. City Marshall. J. C. Christonsen, Cadan Crawford, Wm. St. Peters. The position of marshall seems to be a most coveted job in Elgin be cause most every man in the city, who, being out of work, posed for a nomination for the marshallship. l 0. W. Ballow has on display at Hackett's furniture store some splen did oil paintings, copied from some of the world's masterpieces. . : "Bud" Smith was brought home Sunday morning from the Grande Ronde hospital, La Grande. He is slowly recovering his health, the ope ration for appendicitis being very hard for him. Miss Claryce and Beuna Fine were visiting with friends and relatives in La Grande Saturday and Sunday. 'Miss Lora Schnore, who has been on the sick list for the last two weeks, is slowly recovering, and hopes to be back in school in a short time. The Farmers' Union held a meet ing' in the Farmers' hall in Elgin Tuesday. Miss Nora Niedone, who has been visiting in this city for some time, returned to her home in Summerville the latter part of the week. Miss Edith Bailey of Island City, was a visitor in Elgin Saturday and Sunday. N Bob Blumetfstein is acting as city liharian in the evening this week. Miss Marcia Becker, -who has been teaching in a country school north, returned to her home in Summerville, Wednesday. Mrs. Mary Choate, of Summerville, is spending a few days with friends and relatives of this city. ' Rev. Bentlcy is holding protrnctive meetings in the Baptist church this week. i NOTICE. 1 Notice of the Recorder of the City of La Grande, Oregon, of the assess ment of Section No. I-A of Sower District No. 3 of the City of La Grande, Oregon. Notice is hereby given that the as sessment for the Improvement of Section No. 3 of Sewer District No. 3-A,' of the City of La Grande, Ore gon, under the provisions of Ordi nance No. 768, Series 1914, entitled v,jn Ordinance declaring the cost of constructing a Trunk Sewer Line in District No. 3, Section I-A, from the center line of Greonwood street along the alley .between Washington Ave nue and Adams. Avenue to the center lino of Willow street; determining the property benefitted thereby, and levying an assessment thereon to de fray the costs of so much of said improvement as an eight-inch lateral sanitary sewer for the same distance would cost; providing for an assess ment roll for the same, and directing the entry of said assessment roll in the Docket of City Liens; providing a time when the same shall become deliiuuent; and requiring the City Recorder to prepare a special assess ment roll in accordance with the as sessments levied herein, and to col lect the same, the same gcing the im provement of Section No. 1-A, of Sew er District No. 3 in said City of La Grande, Oregon, ts now in my hands for collection and the same may be paid to me at any time within ten (10) days from the 27th day of Feb ruary, 1914, without penalty, inter est or cost; and each property owner is hereby notified that on application to the undersigned within ten (10) days from the 27th day of February, 1914, which is the first date of pub lication of this section, they will be allowed to pay such assessment in ten (10) annual-installments, the first installment thereof being due and payable on or before the 19th day of February, 1915.
