Elgin, Feb. 13. (Special.) The
second Patrons' Day in the Elgin
schools was held here Feb. 13. It
was a general success, because - so
many of the parents were present.
The second grade, under the guid
ance of Miss Clark rendered a vory
interesting program.' Superintendent
Ivanhoe addressed the audianee with
a most pleasing speech.
Miss Grace Hignman was a visitor
in Imbler Wednesday. -
Sheriff A. Hug was in the city be
tween trains Friday.
Miss Rose Zeiwfel of Summerville,
is spending a few days with her
brother and family, Mr. and Mrs.
Dave Zweifel.
Mr. Frank Smith was a passenger
on the west bound train Thursday.
Mis Truelove is again able to re
sume her duties in the sixth grade.
She .has been sick for three weeks.
Miss Alice Shelton, Miss Vera Hud
son, Miss Hazel Graham and Orion
Hudson were among those who went
to Imbler Wednesday to the O. A. C".
glee club. Evidently from the re
ports, the programme was splendid
and well attended.
Mr. Earl Chandler returned this
week fro,m Portland where he has
been attending to business matters
for two weeks.
Rev. Crimes visited the Elgin high,
school Wednesday afternoon.
In remembrance of the honored
Abraham Lincoln, classes were dis
missed during the third period in the
morning, and Mr. C. Kronenbery read
of some oft' he things of interest in
Lincoln's presidential career.
Mrs. Roy Frjzier and her sister
Mrs. May Kennedy of Denver, Colo.,
who is visiting in this city witnessed
the program rendered by the O. A. C.
glee club in Imbler Wednesday.
The Burns program was postponed
Friday, due to patrons' day. It will
be given next Friday. .
The Rev. Gillstrap and Crimes will
begin holding protracted meetings in
the Highland school house Friday.

Mayor Albee and wife ocupied a logo,
and indeed the entire theater was
dotted with men whose position in
and worka for Portland are of wide
knowledge in both city and state.
The theater program, especially ar
ranged and amplified by Manager
Cofflnberry, was preceded by a brief
welcome by the genial manager in his
characteristic Btyle of whole-hearted
sincerity.
Every act of the show was a head
liner. Leo Carillo, the inimitable
monologist, playfully revised his act
in order to direct convulsive puns at
the grocers. Nor did he. forget the
manufacturers and jobbers, who oc
cupied boxes, in his satirical allus
ions to the high cost of living. Gro
cors and prominent salesmen were
included in the witty fusillade of
Carillo, who proved himself to be an
exceptional ' entertainer.
Play Is Localized.
. Succeeding acts aside from their
usual merit were alive with refer
ences to the merchant, manufacturer,
and jobber, and found immediate re
sponse from the audiance, who ap
plauded each offering in unanimous
appreciation. It was an evening of
continuous enjoyment and one dur
ing which petty troubles, vexations
and cares were thrown abandonly to
the winds by those whose daily duty
it is to feed the critical, complaining
consumers o fa great city. , Those
who had not permitted themselves a
bona fide laugh of pure enjoyment
for years found themselves raven
ously in a side-splitting, tear-provoking
tonic for . the blues before the
curtain was lowered on the last act.
When a business man is afflicted
with- troubles and bugaboos there is
nothing that will sooner effect a cure
than a good hard uncontrollable
laugh, and if the La Grande theater
party served no greater purpose than
to have caused the slightest snicker
among the long-faced grouches which
we occasionally see behind a grocery
