of muslin sack with right hand,
strewing tobacco evenly in paper.

Invention Has Been Patented and It
Works Successfully.
What may be characterized as one '
of the most remarkable inventions re
cently patented, ia a so-called Victor
Centrifugal Micropscoic Gold Sepa
rator. The inVetnor is Martin John.
son of North La Grande, who has
ust received a patent from the U. S.
patent office at Washington, D. C.
The name almost describes the in
strument, or rather machine. It is
intended to gather those minute par
ticles of Invisible gold from the water
of most treams and hold them by
means of a - contrivance rigged up
in the fashion of a cream seperator.
As a matter of fact it is built o the
idea of the cream separator, with
this main difference that instead of
feeding from the top it feeds from '
the bottom. The machine is sot in
the water and causes the gold bearing
fluid to be forced up and into a cham
ber equipped with mercury compart
ments. One could get a better idea
of it by cor paring it with a muffler
on an automobile, or the silencer on a
gun. .The water passes freely through
this compartment and the small par
ticles of gold adhere to the quicksil- .
ver and are held until taken out. The
rotary snatt wnicn runs tnrougn tne
center of it causes a rudder like con
trivance, placed horizontally at the
bottom to force the water upward.
This will be run by a one-horse power
dynamo.
The machine can be placed in any
kind of stream and will handle a ton
of water perminute. In this manner
water that is not heavily charged with
the yellow substance can be made to
pay, inasmuch as water power may
be had along most of the streams to
create the power.
The inventtor has never mined in
his life, but has been a student of
mechanics and physics. He has been
a lumberman most of his life, has in
vented things for paBtime, and be
lieves that he has now invented a
machine that will be the climax of
his inventive career.
Mr. Johnson is a native of Norway
and is about 60 years of age. He
patented a pivotal window some years
ago, which has been adopted by many
constructors of large buildings, but,
has, like many other humble inven
tors, made little out' of it himself.
The new model has been tested out
in the Marsh creek near Boise, and
streams of California, and has proven
successful. A Baker concern is mak
ing the first machine and this will
be in operation along the Snake river
as Boon as completed. It Is estimated
thnt with water delivering 30 cents
per ton of gold, the machine will be
a pnying investment.
It has always been known that wat
er bears gold in varying quantities,
but no one bas ever invented a pro
cess by which the fine substance could
be extracted from the water and
mnke it pay. The public will watch
this new invention with a great deal
of interest.
