INCREASE IN CRIME LOCALLY,
The findings of the recent grand
jury are regrettable in a community
like Union county. What is the
cause of the increase in crime? This
is a question well to ponder over.
Fourteen true bills "were returned by
the jury and crime runs from the un
speakable statutory offences, of which
there were five, to the minor crime of
obtaining money under false pre
tense.
Is every community subject to crime
waves, or are such crimes going on
constantly and it happened that this
grand jury detected them? : All such
questions present themselves when
one looks about him and sees the well
organized condition socially; sees
every institution that is intended to
bring out the best in man or woman.
To say the least, the situation is
apalling and a subject for the stern
er and more experienced minds to
dwell upon. It is a subject that
threatens the very foundation of our
social system and those who by com
parison can throw any light that will
tend toward betterment should hot
hesitate to do so.

more importance. Let's make the
school house the community meeting
place for social events as well as do
all we can to get the parents, teachers
and pupils closer together.

All wives undoubtedly have heard
men casually remark that if they
were in charge of the housework it
would be done more efficiently. Us
ually this has been dismissed as men's
conceit ' Yet it might be worth while
for intelligent, open minded women
to consider the question whether they
cannot , adapt to household use some
typically masculine methods.

announcement. This will be a good
game, the Athletic club being con
sidered stronger than the Wallowa
high school team, defeated last week
by Union.

Forest Park Wednesdny night, when
he knocked out Ed. Warner, formerly
of La Grande, -in the seventh round
o'f a scheduled ten-round encounter,
and it was the most spectacular and
hard fought battle witnessed in this
city in many months. It was a
straight left to the jaw, closely fol
lowed by a right to the body, that
ended, the bout.
