C. Ryder of Wallowa, passed through the city this morning on their way to Elgin where they will visit for several days. On their return trip they will spend a week or more in La Grande visiting and looking over prospects. C. H. Thorpe, of the U. S. forest service with headquarters in Wal lowa, left this city this morning after transacting business at the land office for three or four days. Mr. Thorpe has a territory of one million acres, which keeps him busy. Tbe forest fires, according to his . statements, have decreased since the forest ran gers began, Bnd effected a lessening of this destructive element of more than 70 percent.
