Society Doings and Records of liiness Briefly Told. Joseph, Jan. 27. (Special) At about seven o'clock last Friday night a fire was discovered in one of Mrs. Mitchell's houses on First avenue. The fire department was called and tiad the fire under control in a few minutes. ' Ncboey was hurt; but very little was saved. It is supposed that the fire started from a dfectiveflue, Mrs. Mitchell had no insurance. Grace Caviness, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Caviness, is very sick with pleurisy and it is feared she, may have to undergo an operation.' Miss Eyadne McCully entertained the basketball teams of the Joseph Tiigh. school last Friday night. The -evening was spent in playing, after ' which refreshments were served. AH are effusive in their praise of Miss "McCully as an entertainer. " . The Zethilethian Literary Society of 'the Joseph high school, held their, program last Friday, after which the election of officers took place for the second semester. The officer elected are: Louis Stevenson, presi dent; Dean Pollock, secretary, and Shirley HayeV treasurer. It is the intention of this society to hold a aer ies of debates with the different high schools of the county. ' Misses Ruth Smith, .Fay and Annis Wade, Zona Combes, Clara Bauers and Kate Harmon of Enterprise, were -up to Joseph last Friday for the W. H. W. dance. R. C. Kingsley of Imbler, was in Joseph last week looking over his ranch on Prairie creek, that he traded some Walla Walla farm land for. It is the intention of Mr. Kingsley to es tablish, a modern dairy farm. Sheriff Edgar Marvin was up fast Tuesday on official business. J. P. Rusk of La Grande, was in Joseph greeting friends and attending to some business. Prof. Mazanti came in Tuesday to give his regular weekly dancing les- sons.
