"Seattle yesterday endorsed the verdict of the rest of the world
as to the extraordinary merit of 'Quo Vadts,' which opened at The
Metropolitan yesterday afternoon before a big audience, and last night
played to absolute capacity. Cines made this fjlm in Italy, George '
Kleine has exploited It in America, and it has proved a celluloid 'Ben
Hur.' one-tenth of the bit; tcenic tf fecit of thin terpen production could be

DAZZLING PAGEANTRY.
" 'Quo Vadts' has set the pace for cinematographic magnificence.
First of all, it is a great spectacle. It is regally inspiring in the sweep
. of its banquet revelry, chariot racing, vistas of Roman architecture
and gardens and showing the approach of the band of Hons to the
kneeling Christian martyrs in the arena. The burning of Rome is a
pageant in itself, and the arena scene shows the many hundreds of
spectators crowding the forms to lend realism to a few brief moments
of the action, . .

At Ivry, a Paris suburb, has just died
a remarkable old man, a septuagenar-i
Ian, named Ftalssard. He died In pov
erty, but bad he chosen he could have
become one of the most famous Euro
pean sculptors. As it was, he finished
lite as he began it more or less pen
niless. When a boy he was appren
ticed to a marble eutter, aid he at
once discovered his powers In this di
rection. For fifty years he had contin
ued to esecut the most beautiful works
of art, mostly In mosaics.' M. Frets,
sard's masterpiece took htm nearly
twenty-four years to perfect . It is a
black marble table. In the middle Is
a chessboard, on either side of which
are playing cards arranged as fans. On
the table are dominoes and dice, cig
ars and cigarettes, and sevral coins In
gold and' silver. All these are, ot
course,' inlaid. The materials in the
table, bestde the black marble, are
agate, onyi, porphyry, malachite and
lapis lazuli, the tones of which are
black, red, orange, blue and white.
Ninety different kinds of marble were,
also used.
Eloped by Aeroplane.
An elopement by aeroplane which
has, yet some features of. the old-time
elopement Is reported from Niort,
France.
Two months ago a good-looking
young airman was giving exhibition
flights at Niort A pretty governess
tell In love with him and begged him
to take her up in his aeroplane. A few
days later the airman eloped with her
In the machine, and did not descend
-until he reached Issy, 2S0 miles away.
The girl's lather has now lodged a
complaint against the airman, whom
he accuses of having adbucted his
daughter and detained her againet her
will. The governess, when she ap
peared before the police commissary,
aaid that she had eloped with the air
man of her own free will and declared
that she would be eternally grateful to
him for flying away with her. She add
ed that, as she wbb of age, she was
free to do as she pleased.
The father's , complaint was dis
