in La Grande who will be interested
in the campaign, ' and appended '' is
an article from the' San .'Leander
Standard, which is of double interest
locally in view of the fact that the
writer is , Fred B. Currey old time
La Grander, now editing a paper in
ine California town. The article
says:
James M. Murphy, of Sacramento,
has this week announced .himself
candidate for the office of Secretary
of State as a Progressive. Mr. Mur
phy and the editor of the Standard
were residents of the same town
La Grande, Oregon, for some six
years,' where Mr. Murphy was an
active and useful , citizen, closely
identified with the growth and prog
ress of the community, and where
he was held in high esteem and re-J
spect by those in position to judge
of his merit and ability. For , three
years he was a member of the board
of directors of the La Grande Com
mercial club, one of the strongest
and most wide awake community
organizations of the state. His
ability to grasp a situation and
solve a difficult problem made him
an important factor when questions
of town and county interest present
ed themselves, and his record of ac
complishment while, there, Affiliated
with his brothers, who were engaged
in the mercantile business was such
that his name will long be associated
with the development of La Grande,
and, in fact, all of Eastern Oregon.
Mr. Murphy came to Oregon
from- California and after six years
residence concluded to return to Cal
ifornia, whose praises he had con
tinued to sound. He was always a
staunch friend of the common people.
Ever advocating measures which
sought in a sane and safe way to
lead to better conditions, but never
a radical thereby maintaining ' the
respect and confidence of all classes.
Should the people of California hon
or him with their votes, and elevate
him to the high office to which he
ity and inclination to serve the peo
aspires they will certainly have made
no mistake, as those who know him
feel certain that he has both the abil
ple well and honorably.
