FOR- While the business men are easting np their accounts at the end of the year and their customers as well are taking stock of their spiritual benign, it is not a bad idea for everyone and especially parents, to do likewise in regard to their personal finance. , Are you further ahead in that re spect than you were at the end of last yearT Honey in the bank at the close of the year is a good measure of your success in material things. Have you as large a savings account as you should and could have? Former President William H. Taft has said: "There is no cause that I know of that works so much on a conscientious man who loves his wife and his children as the prospect of leaving them helpless in the world and dependant on others; and there is nothing comparable to the relief from this worry." ' : Extra money,' beyond that required for living expenses is a buffer against hardship and misfortune. ' So if you would not be forever crushed between the upper and nether mill stones of 'poverty, you must ' save systematic ally from the income of your work ing years. And this is the best pro- vision you can make for your wife and children. But it is possible in this day of op portunity to do much more than just escape being poor. You can become rich if you really want to. The world has by no means exhausted the op portunities for men of limited means but the right kind of determination. Money begets money. But the peo ple who are without capital and who sometimes complain bitterly against that the original nucleus for men's fortunes costs immense sacrifices on the part of the owners. ; X. : -t you :bv dttlAted yourself m. dividend for the year 1913 in the shape of money saved from your in come, turn yourself toward the com ing year and plan to do better for yourself and .those who are depend ent upon you in 1914. . Some per sons are inclined to regard New Year's ' resolutions lightly, but, as a rule, they do not ridicule the .resolu tions themselves but make fun of those who fail to keep good resolu tions made. One of the most sensi ble New Year's resolutions that any one can make is to save money sys tematically and deposit it regularly in the bank. It is a double-barreled resolution because its fulfillment means stronger character as well as increased resources. Make it and keep it, and get your share of the 1120,000,000 interest paid to depos itors every year by the savings banks of the United States. Summons. British Guiana boasts ot one of the few survivors of the many peculiar birds now known mostly as fossllB, according to a writer in Our Dumb Animals. This Is the crested hoactr zln, and may be found only in very dense and unexplored forests. The hoactzln Is noted chiefly for its pe culiarity in possessing four well de veloped legs. . This would never be suspected in the adult bird, inasmuch as a certain modification begins while the bird is yet young, whereby, the claw-like legs or hands become shaped like wings, and leathers are grown, so that when this bird gets its full plum age there Is nothing left from which one would suspect that these wings were once legs. ' , . .. The young birds, before this modi fication does take' place, leave the nest and climb'or scramble over, the limbs not unlike tree toads or youns monkeys. They .feed on flic youns arum leaves and are in this youn.i state the nSarest approach to a t;uad raped of any bird. . $9.90 Takes Your Choke of Any LADUIS COAT CR TAILORED SUIT Values from $20.00 to $40.00 $9190 49c For Final Clean-up Childrens and Misses Odd Coats Values to $10.00 89c For Final Clean-up of a ' Large Line Ladies Coats Values to $17.50 79c For Final Clean-up of one lot ladies Dresses and Kimonas Half-Price Sale i of Wide Embroidery $) -"- Sale of OvercoatsiWorthItol$15.00 All $3.00 GOTdoniHatslReduto - $2.40 All $4.00 Stetson HatslReduced to - - $3.20 All $5.00 Stetson Hats Reduced to - - $4.00 Still Lower Prices on Broken Line Shoes 3 Yd, Table Cloth v . $1.50 An Extra Heavy Quality of Union Linen in Attractive Patterns. -..' If so, 'nu.f said.-' With a proper sense of propor tion, the old-time buggy was made to hold exactly one and a half. Tbe re sult was propinquity also bliss. Along the road all too short-you drove. Moo cows mooed in the. dis tance. Anxious mothers came to the door and cried : "Wi-l-lie ! " But you were lost to bovine .vlaints and maternal solicitudes. Pungent odors from the dog fennel mingled with the faint perfume of the thistle's bloom. The night dew lay on the fields,, star light drenched the earth and you dis covered you had a soul. The air was chill, and you .fixed a shawl. Hands touched and withdrew, followed by most eloquent and ecstatic silence. Then came the parting, as you "hand ed" her out at the gate. A law has been passed by the shah ot Persia forbidding persons to weave carpets according to European design. Violation of the enactment is a crimi nal offense, and the Imperative atti tude taken will have a greater tend ency than ever to raise the -Persian carpet or rug in esteem. Often a Per sian carpet will remain in the family for generations, such careful treat ment does it receive. When the owner of a valuable carpet dleB he very, of ten gives instructions that it shall be cut up in pieces as heirlooms to his suc cessors, and should a member of the family not receive a portion he would feel very greatly slighted. The designs of Persian carpets have been handed down from remote ages. Each family keeps its own design, no two carpets being alike for fear ot the Evil Eye. . Wonderful Cough Remedy.
