"Jollity" is a fitting nomenclature . in ' connection with the title of the club of young men who entertained for the second time this winter, last Wednesday evening at Bex hall. The Jollity club got away with flying col- j ors and the 90 odd couples in atten-, day night, where they will ' enjoy themselves at dancing. ' Ten couples are' booked to go and all anticipate a royal good time. . Tuesday night, Jan. 13, the degree staff of La Grande Lodge No. 16, I. O. 0. F., went to Baker and initiated a class of four for Elkhorn Lodge dance had a most delightful evening of it. The hesitation watts made its debut at the party, (riving added prestige and significance to it. A. on basketball courts at Baket and Union ended in defeat for the borne team. Thursday night the M. L A. were defeated by, the Baker Y. M. C. A. at Baker score 29 to 28 in -favor of Baker. ' At Union last night -the score was 48 to 17 in favor of 'Union. The players who participated in the games included Woods, Bean, Larson, Geddes, Elmer and Lester : Stoddard, Schofleld and Childers. ' ' The Elks have invented another unique social stunt. This time it is a hardtimes party and is set down for January 21. It is to be hardtimes in every respect and great things are promised if the nature of the invi tations are indicative of the ' main event. The invitations consist of a postal card upon which are real, sure enough pictures of E. E. Kirtley and Norman Desilet imitating some of the down-to-the-minute terpsichor ean evolutions. But this is not all that will keep Elkdom busy durin the prelenten sea son. The Hardtimes ball is to be fol lowed by a dress ball just to let you know that they ere fooling. This is going to be a banner society stunt and already costumes are devising for this. In this, colonial dames will vie for honors with the best that Greece or Rome ever wore, and Bul garian affectatians will fittingly offset gay costumes representing the best Spain ever showed to the world. It will be an eyeopener, one of those characteristically Elk doings for which they are noted here in La Grande and elsewhere. "Leave it to the Elks to do things right," is the key note of this feature event. ! This fancy dress ball will be staged on the 4th of February. "". On the 18th they will regale the membership with a regular stag soc ial followed by a minstrel show. Wie nie Rogers says it is going to be bet ter than Sarah Bernhard. Some show is the title of this extravaganze, and with Jack Peare in the title role sup ported by the famous Elk's tooth con tingency, a sure enough Bernhard stunt is on the bill. Of course after the stunt will come the big eats, when everything of the chicken will be de voured but the crow. - Nothing is said of the feathers. ;,: -. '." Miss Mildred Bradford, of Waverly, Illinois, was complimented delight fully Monday evening when Miss Zoe Bragg entertained at Five Hundred for the Illinois guest of Mr. and Mrs. John Girdler, at the Bragg home, 501 Adams. The guests were from the younger ranks of the city. Six tab les of guests played cards, honors' go ing to Walter Francis and Miss Ghormley. . Elkhorn 1 Lodge was declared by all visitors to be entertainers of hig order. ' ' . Members of the Kaffe Klatch and several special guests , for the even ing , making in,all eleven' tables, were entertained last evening by Mrs. Tur ner Oliver and Miss Margaret Anson, at the Oliver home. Handsome deco rations and' delicious refreshments went hand in hand with the card fea tures. Mrs. P. S. Robinson and Mrs. F. L. Meyers won honors at cards. The afternoon session of the' Kaffee Klatch will be entertained next time by Mrs. E. E. Bragg. Mrs. Jay Van Buren was a delight ful hostess Thursday afternoon to the members of the Bridge club, with her sister, Mrs. Wells of Kansas City, as guest of honor. ; Favors at cards went to . Mrs, , W, H. Bohnenkamp. Refreshments- harmonius with the oc casion, were served by the hostess. Tuesday evening Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Wells of Kansas' City, : were ' honor guests at the Jay Van Buren home, 808 Main, when Mr: and' Mrs.Van Buren entertained at Five Hundred complimentary to the Kansas City guests. . The home was tastily decor ated, 'pink and white color schemes being carried' out witH profuse- use of carnations. Toothsome" refreshments were served during the evening. At cards Mrs. Wells, and G. The North La Grande Embroidery club was entertained in a very pleas ing manner Wednesday afternoon by Mrs. Charles Hoak, on Spruce street Fourteen members and one guest were in attendance, during the afternoon and enjoyed the refreshments and sewing which were orders of the day. Two weeks from last Wednesday the Fields home in North La Grande will be the scene of this club's activity, in the evening of that date. The la dies will entertain their husbands. The event will be -one of the chief functions undertaken by the North Side Embroidery club this winter. Mrs. C. M. Lockwood was a gracious hostess to the afternoon section of the Sans Souci Thursday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. F. J.- Holmes will entertain the next gathering of the evening section. 'v . ' : Mrs. E". Mr. and Mrs. Wells have been the guests of Mrs. Well's ! the Happy Hour club yesterday after- relatives' in La Grande for the past ten days and while here Mrs. Wells has met her old-time friends with whom she was a co-resident of. La Grande during her girlhood and prior to her removal to Kansas City. Mrs. Robert Pattison and Mrs. P. S. Robinson jointly entertained the members of the Eastern Star social club last Tuesday.
