After a heroic struggle for life, the
seven-year-old daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Herbert Hawkins of Elgin, last
Tuesday night succumbed to the rav
ages of measles and pneumonia. She
was first ill with measles and in the
course of a week or so developed
symptoms of pneumonia. During
the last week of her life she was kepi
alive by artificially supplying oxy
gen, which, however, was not avail
ing to stave off the grim hand of
death. " ' '' " ", ' '
The little girl was one of the very
brightest pupils in school and gave'
promise of superior ' talent. She
was .in the third grade and was pro
gressing rapidly. At home she was
nn obedient nad lovab'e child and
'.va rh( favorite of her playmates,
all of whom attended the funeral.
The Elgin Knights of Pythias nobly
assisted the family during the illness
of the beloved daughter and aided'
in making the last sad . rftes im
pressive. Mrs. H. L. Hawkins, Mr.
and Mrs. Geo. Kemp and Mr. and
Mrs. C. L. Hawkins of this city and
Mr. and Mrs. Klrtley of Pendleton,
were among the outside relatives who
attended the funeral services. '

Resolution.
WHEREAS, DK James W. Lough
lin, the president of the Board of Li
brary Commissioners of La Grande,
Oregon, is about to' depart from La
Grande on a visit , to his old home
in New York, and is uncertain as to
whether he will return, and it is fit
ting' that the library board at' this
time shall give some expression of the
high esteem in which it holds its pres
ident; and ' ';
WHEREAS, Dr. Loughlin has been
most active, ever since he located in
La Grande, three years ago, in every
public enterprise ' for the benefit of
this community and especially in or
ganizing this public library and in
assisting to procure from the Carnegie
library Endownment Fund the ap
propriation by which this splendid li
brary building was erected; therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that we deeply
regret the departure of Dr.. Loughlin
from La Grande and earnestly hope
that he will not find it necessary to re
main long away from La Grande or
to sever his connection with this li
brary board, and that he may return
to our midst at an early date and as
sume his wonted activity in public
affairs. . f
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED,
that in case Dr. Loughlin does not
return to La Grande that we com
mend him to any community where he
may locate as a man who stands high ,
in his profession and one who takes
an active interest in. the public wel-1
fare; who is honest and energetic and
has demonstrated his efficiency as the
leader of this library movement.
, The foregoing resolution was unan
mously adopted by the board of com
missioners of the La Grande public
library, at a meeting held in the li
brary building on the evening of Jan
uary 12, 1914.
