IN Fresh Salmon Scarce and Crabs Come Scattering to Market. Portland, Jan. 16. (Special.) The biggest winter run of Columbia river smelt is now on. - Thousands of the shiny little fish are being received here every day and the demand for VI1 4-It A JbMBIIiI 4A I them is little short of remarkable. The price has dropped to two cents a pound, wholesale, a wonderful dif ference of a month or six weeks ago, when they were bringing $1 a pound. Practically all the smelt are coming from the Cowlitz river, at the pres ent time, the principal catches being made from Ostrander to the mouth of the river. They are extra color and are selling in the retail markets here at 5 cents a pound, like the pro verbial "hot cakes.". ;; ' Fresh salmon continues scarce. A few are coming in each day, but they are by no. means sufficient, . It will be . some little time before enough will come in to meet the demand.- , Razor clams are now on the mar ket.
