EFFICIENCY GREAT NEED
The teachers' institute is over for
.a year. Many and learned men and
women voiced their, ideas on the
newer problems in , education and
most of the teachers took home with
them a broader and more dignified
view of the profession of teaching.
All of the meetings had an air of
feeling that much of our education
is now in the balance. , Theories that
tad been promulgated a decade ago
have now had time to prove them
selves in fact and experience. There
was an air uncertainty about some
ideas and an air of assurance about
others. Some are still conservative
in their theories and the newer gener
ation is unstintingly in favor of all
the late methods. It seems that most
all education nowadays "is tendinK to

and will not develop those traits that
make a man a man, in art or literature
wihout which his old world' of ours
would be more than piosaic -In
all study It should not be for
gotten that while the child is acquir
ing knowledge it is at the same ime
forming a habit that will stick to the
child through every walk of life. , It
is a big point and one which in this
age of impatience is likely to creep

Ackerman, in his uddress, made the
point that study should be prosecuted

That's the point exactly and one that
deserves more than passing notice. (

mastery of any kind of a problem,
they are not only faliing to get the

importance they are cultivating the
vicious habit of being satisfied with

ocre way. But this day and age re
quires proficiency. Every .magazine
is preaching efficiency, and if. the
student does not get the incentive to
ward mastery in schools much of the
time spent on school benches is lost.
