LA GRANDE ETENTNG OBSERVER, PAGE SEVEN APPLE MAHKET IS WAITING HOW Portland,' Or., Oct. 27 (Special) The condition of the apple market at the present time Is practically a wait ins affair. The general buying trade (teems to have its immediate and near by requirements and for that reason thnre iad tone of easiness in the trade with lira keenness shown in the buy ing. Sales at the present time are per haps the smallest of the season to date. Perhaps there are two reasons for this: the filled up condition of the trade and the recent free offering at low price, by some of the distributing interests. V . , After a very careful study of con ditions of supply and demand, the fol lowing special report of the apple traed is given by W. F. Gwin, selling head of the Northwestern Fruit Exchange- of this city. y.-.,'' "While the apple market is in a strong position, it is, nevertheless, ex periencing a period of extreme dull ness. This is partially due to the fact that disagreeable unfavorable wea ther has been prevailing in the east. The slackness in the demand coming at a. time when the movement from the Pacific coast is at its height has resulted in an accumulation of unsold cars at principal middel west gate ways. The trade, quick to pout them selves on these conditions, and feeling the pressure to sell on the part of the distributing agencies, ' is - naturally quick to take advantage of the situ ation and are trying to "bear"' the market as much as possible. - "this is a perfectly natural and le gitimate playing for position between two parties to any trade. Within 24 hours weather conditions In the east have shown marked improvement, and there is already a better feeling al though, as yet there are not sufficient orders to take care of the applies, and the situation will continue relative-' ly easy until present accumulations are cleared." Idaho agents for turkey producers have been in La Grande arranging for supplying the local market, whr needed, with the Thanksgiving bird. The first birds have yet to put in an appearance, but the Idaho supply will be ample to fill orders that home pro duction cannot take car of. (Special) Re ceipts for last' week have been: cat tle, 1788; calves, 57; hogs, 5347; sheep. 2558. . . ,;. Reaction in the cattle market set in Wednesday after an auspicious open ing: Monday. Receipts have been ab normally large and killers are tern porarily well supplied. Prime steers dropped to 87.60, cows: 86.50, and trade was slow the last half. Market sharply : lower this, week; outlet narrowed at mid-week and swine values' were shaded from 88.75 to 88.60 By Friday the trade was very sticky, buyers indifferent and 88.36 was the limit of bids; a liberal quotation was is oo t Sft 9K A very slow and uninteresting sheep trade..
