the effect that the Annual Elks' ball
which heretofore fell on the night of
February 22, -will in the future be
eVln Thanksgiving aight. The first
ball, according to the new arrange

ball". The new order comes as the
result ef some exposition to the 'for

It is thought the new date will be
more acceptable to, everybody and en
. able the lodges to be more munificent
than ever before. Them will conse
quently be two Elk annual balls this
year, the regular annual having been
held last winter.

witness the production of the play,
"By 'Cousin From Manila," staged by
the Wilson Comedy ; company. After
the dhow the comedy company gave a
dance 'in the opera house an! the La
Grande party remained and ook" it
in. Following the daace they went to
the home of Mr. and Mm. Kleen, where
they were .entertained , at ' luncheon.

On Wednesday nightfall the men
and women who had participated in
the comic opera "The Elk's Tooth",
were entertained by the lodge in their
building on Depot and Washington.

came when a five ' piece orchestra
struck up dreamy waltz strains that
made everybody feel he or she was

There was no sea sickness. Narry
a bit of it, and all were impressed with
the fact that the once wild and wooly
island had, through the agency of the
Elks' crab been converted into a veri
table place not only for the easy times
and the Fiiinigans, but the natives as
well. In fact all traces of savagery
had been shooed away by the appear
ance of the fairies. All of the Bar
barians appeared in conventional cos
tume devoid of paint and grease, com
pletely civilized under the benign ad
ministration of the noble King Wiene
Wurst . ' '.

light of the entire cast
After the dancing was over Captain
Blowhard of the old ship Greyhound,
led the assembled guests into the din
ing room of the ship where a repast,
worthy of a royal household was serv
ed. How the king on such a remote
island could have gathered together
all of the delicacies that weighted the
festive board is still the unsolved mys
tery. Dancing on the deck of the Sea
Queen had whetted the appetites of
the voyagers and Kokomo pheasants
disappeared with a rapidity that
would have done justice to the grimy
warriors before their civilization.

tained the assembled guests with his
reminiscences as king. ; ' '
AH of the choruses of the play were
repeated to the delight of everybody
and the assemblage departed at an
early hour on the morning of the
next day feeling that, the Elks never
could do things in a half way. It wu
a fine recognition on the part of the
Elks for the services rendered in vne
play, and it is safe to predict that
they never will have the slightest dif
ficulty in enlisting all of the local tal
ent needed to state whatever they
may decide to put on.

Nearly 200 members of the order of
Eastern Star and relatives' of mem
bers, celebrated the visit to La Grande
of the 1 grand' worthy matron, Mrs,
Reinsacker of Condon, Wednesday ev
ening by arranging a very pretty ban
quet in her honor. The entertaining
committee presented the guest of hon
or with a bouquet of roses as a token
of esteem. The guest . of honor
visited the lodge proper earlier in the
evening and at the appointed hour the
guests were seated to a toothsome
luncheon. The order has recently add
ed a large equipment of silverware to
its paraphernalia and these were used
for the first time at the banquet. Hal
lowe'en baskets of plenty artistically
decorated the festal boards.'
The delightful service of coffee was
the result of the personal preparation
of the liquid by a demonstrator for
Wadhams & Company, who furnished
the coffee gratis.
On Friday evening, October 17, Mr.
and Mrs. d. Field gave a surprise par
ty in honor of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Field
on the 15th anniversary of their mar
riage. The rooms were handsomely
decorated in red and white and aut
umn leaves. Varicolored autumn
leaves stood out in beautiful relief up
on the riure white linen of the festive
table, in addition to the various sea
sonable flowers. A bountiful supper
was served the assembled guesw and '
many and appropriate toasts wcrej
made in honor of the occasion. The j

Mrs. C H. Conkey was a delightful
hostess to the afternoon section of the
Kaffee Klatch yesterday afternoon at
her May Park home. The guests went
out in autos and had a most delight- j
ful time.
