Fighting every inch of the way, outplaying their op ponents more than half the time, the superior weight and experience of the Weiser high school team, mingled with the. "breaks" in the' game in the vis itors'', favor, was too hard a combin ation for the light, inexperienced Ba ker high football team' to cope- with yesterday, and while a comparison of the two teams indicates that Weiser should have won at least 30 to 0, they crossed, the Baker goal line but once and the home guards escaped a hut out through a pretty drop kick from the 35-yard line by Swan in the sec ond quarter, the final score being 7 to 3 in favor of Weiser. While defeated, the Baker team has every reason to feel proud of the' game they played. Outweighed nearly 20 pounds to the man, racing a team of experienced old players, the odds were all in favor of Weiser,-more so because Hoff , the fastest half-back and one of the best defensive players of the Baker team, was kept out of the game by reason of the action' of the faculty, Hoff being declared in eligible because he has not attended school regularly. There is much feel ing in the matter as many are of the opinion that with Hoff in the game Baker would have won, but it is not a matter for newspaper comment Rev. Father Driscoll of La Grande, officiated as referee with James Nich ols and George Jett of Baker, as um pire and head linesman respectively. Canned Goods- in Demand. . Engene, Ore., Oct. 16. An order for three carloads of 'string beans for shipment to Chicago, which is declared to be the first large order ever received for shipment of canned vegetables from .the west to the east, was received yesterday by J. C. Holt, manager of the Engene Fruitgrowers Association here. When the cannery began putting away the Lane county product. there were many who doubted the ability of the association to sell, any large quantity. ' ' j ' The ' Eugene cannery in the past week has dispatched four carloads of dried prunes for shipment' to Lon don and two more carloads will go be fore the end of the week.' Prunes have all been dried now and the can nery is busy packing the product. Apples and pumpkins are' coming in from the farmers, the former for the most part to be repacked and shipped green, and the latter to be canned for pies. t "".
