open season for the spilling of "next
year" talk, get ready to watch Clark
Griffith's smoke in ' the American
league during 1914. The "Old Fox"
expect, to be in the race from bell
to bell. ) He isn't claiming the; pen
nant, but , lightning has ' been known
to strike in other places than Phila
delphia, so how about Washington. '
Furthermore Groff calmly announc
ed that he would never buy another
pitcher as long as he was mixed up
in baseball. After that he wont have
any use for them.:, . ' ;:
"Go out and pick them," says Grif
ftth, "that is the only way to get the
good ones now. , I have Ave pitchers
on my staff at the present time who
give promise of being as good as they
make them. Not one of them cost

trol and Griff will keep them on the
job, working out every day until the
snow flies. .
It was only early this spring that
Griffith yelled about the scarcity of
lefthondcd pitchers. Then Boehling
came albnir. ' Now he has Bentley
and Harper,' southpaws, added to hfl
string. . Shaw, who came to Wash
ington from York, Pa., is touted as
having as much .speed as Walter
Johnson. ' Griff can't aee any reason
for worrying through the winter.
To help Griffith along a bit with
his hopes for next, year, we nominate
President Wilson as the candidate to
pitch the ball out on the diamond for
thenextJ world's series. .' The Ath
letics caugnt him with a crippled
team for sixgames in a row or there
would have been a different' story to
tell this year, in Griff's opinion. And
the Washington boss declares that
Walter Johnson could beat the Giants
three games out of four without bat
ting an eye.' .

Mrs. Martha E. Bramlet, . aged 69
years, died Tuesday, October 14,' 1913,
at the heme of her son, Nathan Bram
let, in Lower Valley. The funeral ser
vices will be held from the Bramlet
chapel Friday morning, and inter
ment in the Lower Valley cemetery. '
Mrs. Bramlet is an old pioneer of
this county! having settled on a home
stead near Wallowa before the organ
ization of this county.. . She leaves to
mourn her demise seven children, four
sops, Henry, Lewis, Charles and Na
than Bramlet, three daughters, Mrs.
Martha, Mrs, Sarah Knott, of Wal
lowa, and Mrs. Mary Valentine of
Freewater, and a host of friends in
this county.- , -,. .v
