been of the best grade all this S
S season, are now in the markets in
box quantities and the selling of
green or ripe apples by the pound
is almost over. Winter supplies
$ of thin fruit are being laid in and
3 a brisk sale is reported from both
wholesalers and retail merchants.

come over their purchases of apples in
the Pacific Northwest this season that
it is likely that practically all the for
eign apples hereafter bought for that
market will come from this section.
The Northwestern Fruit Exchange
of this city secured some rather lib
eral business this season from Johan
nesburg parties. 'This was their first
experience, with the fruit from this
section and they are mighty glad that
they made the experiment. All told
the South African parties purchased
25 cars of apples in the Pacific North

Prior to coming here they had pur
chased about 76 cars at Nova Scotia as
in former years they had' purchased
all their requirements there. Hear
ing even in Nova Scotia of the won
derful fruit of the Pacific Northwest,
the Johannesburg parties took the first
tram lor Portland ana soon made their
initial purchases. The last shipment
of Pacific Northwest apples to South
Africa' will be made via Montreal, Oc
tober 28th. :
The fact that the new fruit crop of
their home sections comes into the
markets about the turn of the year
precludes further purchases, for this
season here.
The first carload of Jonathan apples
marketed under the "Skookum" label
of the Pacific Northwest, has reached
New York and a wire to this city says
that the stock was in "bully'.' condi
tion. Such expressions from the New
York trade for anything except the
leading varieties of "-' apples really
means something. It indicates that
after all the quality of Pacific North
west fruit is breaking a few records.

$140,000,000, according to the esti
mates of Dr. James Withycombe, di
rector of the experiment station, and
the population is slightly under 100.-
000. If the number of farmers in the
state is 60,000, perhaps an over esti
mate, the average share of the farm
er is about $2,800.
The exact valuation placed unon
farm crops by Dr. Withycombe is $74,
099,166, and the value of other agri
cultural products is estimated at $65,
405,600. The grand total is $139,605,
326. This is almost S14.000.000 Great
er than the valuation last year, and
indicates great prosperity.' The aver
age Oregon farmer seems to be get
ting beyond the reach of hard times.

To pipe the overflow from the new
reservoirs to Round-up Park for the
filling of the artificial lakes was the

ing, and the commissioners view the

completed there will be a big overflow j
of pure water from the reservoirs on i
the south hill and it has been the pur
pose of the commission to pipe this in j
a straight line to the river. However
when the Round-up directors com
menced excavating for artificial lakes
at the park they conceived the i'ha
of utilizing the overflow for furnish
ing the lakes with an everchanging
supply of fresh water. The matter
was nronosed to the commission last
inight and it was the sense of that body
that the city would be willing to pay
for the laying of the pipe toward the
park along a distance equal to the
distance between the reservoirs and
the river.
A line will be run from the reser
voirs to the nark and an estimate
made of the cost of a terra cotta pipe.
Roughly speaking it is believed that,
if the Round-up board accepts the
commissioners' terms, it will cost in
the neighborhood of $6000.
