railroad systems are vying with one
another to make record time on fruit
shipments from the Pacific northwest.
The . traffke -, department ; of the
Northwestern Fruit Exchange of this
city has just received work that a car
load of pears shipped by the Rogue
River Fruit and Produce association
had reached New York in 11 days, five
hours and 15 minutes. The railroads
aa a rule consider that they are mak
ing excellent time from the Pacific
coast when they land fruit shipments
in New York within 13 or 14 days.
' The carload of pears that made the
record time to the New York market,
arrived in perfect condition. It was
of the Cornice variety and was shipped
from the famous Hollywood orchards
which are owned by A. C. Allen, the
prominent Medford fruit man.
The schedule time made for this
carload beforehand was 130 hours from
Umatilla to Chicago and the actual
run was made in 133 hours and 15
minutes. The shipment was made by
the Union Pacific and Illinois Cen
tral systems.
In order to move the apple crop
more promptly and in far better chape
than ever' before there was this season
! a complete readiustment of schedules
from the Pacific coast to the eastern
markets. Heretofore fruit shipments
have been carried on more or less in
an "experimental way and at times
much loss has been shown as a result
of slow movement.
Since the' railroads have decided to
carry the fruit products east on the
same fast freight trains that nre used
to transport the lesskeeping varieties
from California, there has beei a no-

the northern fruit when it reached its
eastern' destination. , . .. .
The condition of the pear market
iif the east is rather badly mixed.
There are so many different qualities
of fruit offered there by the Pacific
coast i.nd from eastern placer that
buyers are very discriminating in their
purchases. While for some of the
product of the Pacific coast, the pric-1
es obtained were scarcely mor man
the, freight charge with the cost of
the box added, fruit sent from the

brands has been sold at from two to
three times what some of the others
