'"i!' i Miss Dollie Chasteen and group of tra ied man eating lions and leopards with the Barnes Circus here Saturday. A feature attraction on the program of the Al. G. Barnes big 3-ring wild animal circus is a lion act, twenty four of the largest full grown, jungle bred African cats, are assembled in the act. The group represents the very acme of lion perfection as to size, value and training. The herd, if placed on the market, would easily bring $50,000, as it is not unusual for a male lion to sell for $2,500. The lions are all turn ed loose in the big steel arena in the centre of the tent at one time, one lone man in their midst. Herr Louis Roth is the man a trainer and tamer of lions of inter national fame. The things he makes these lions do and the masterly con trol he seems to exercise over the man eaters, is certainly remarkable, crowding his way among them, arm ed enly with a small revolver and a whip, he mounts them into great pyra mids, feeds one of the fiercest, raw meat from his naked lips, arranges the lot in a great pile on. the floor and lays on the topmost of them. The daring of the chap seems fairly "devil ish" and the audience sits tensed and shivery. The act ends with the lions doing a free-for-all race around the arena. A. Barnes and Ivor Sim onson might have ended seriously, took place in the Elgin bakery last night. .The wall, paper caught from the oil stove used at the lunch counter, and the wall and ceiling at the back of the .room were, soon .a mass of flames. An alarm was turned in and the fire department responded very promptly, but Barnes and Cimonson had the fire, under control, haying brought a small hose that was at hand into action. The loss was slinght and was covered by insurance. Elgin Re corder. ... Your job printing. Have it done at the Observer office. ' . Excursion to La Grande. Union, Oct. 6.
