La Grande's new method of gov ernment will be the cure of present municipal ills no one doubts it but the success or failure of commission government will be largely shaped by the commissioners who are placed in office the first two years. A construc tive mind is gr ter than a conductive mind anywhere, and once La Grande's municipal affairs are re-aligned, kinks untwisted, better system substituted, and more economic courses hewn out of present chaotic forest of muni cipal problems, it will not be difficult to keep the ship out of the breakers. The real problem facing the new gov ernment is before the city and its voters now. To put men in office whom the vot ers know are capable of coping with the situation, is the problem of the hour and there is little time for de bate on the subject. Individual thought OFFICE SHOULD SEEK MAN. La Grande, Oct 3. (To the Editor of the Observer). La Grande has sig nally distinguished itself by the over whelming victory in favor of, good government, by its adoption of its commision managerial system of gov ernment, and has passed its first mile stone on the way of progress. There yet remains a further duty equally im portant; that is, the selection of three good men or women as commis sioners,' incompetent or unfitted to ble with men to any office under the city government, and contributed in a large measure to the victory of Wed nesday. It would be suicidal for the city to start off with the election of commis sioners, incompetent , of unfitted to carry out the new system of govern ment, and thus bring reproach upon our charter. We can rest assured that the new charter will be criticised by our unfriendly critics, and any mis takes, though wholly due to official delinquency and not to the charter, will be at once attributed 'to the de fects of the new sysm. The peo ple have the selection of the three commissioners only, and this is all im portant. The commissioners should be men or women who stand for some thing, and have an intelligent appre ciation, of what is required... Besides the financial side there Is also the mor al ide the happiness, and well being of our citizenship for the man' is above the dollar. This ia distinctly an office that- should seek the man or woman'; his "wealth or property, his ability to draw, big checks or little checks, his club popularity or non club life, his bunk afflliatim or non al'filiations, his being a "good mixer" or being reserved, are not fcr.portat.
