People who see the monthly reports ten' wonder from whence the depart ment gets its grist of information. It is rather a large undertaking and it keeps many of the country's most ex pert statisticians constantly at work. There are about 130,000 reporters who ' contribute to the making of the gov ernment's crop reports and the only compensation that most of them re ceive is free copies of the depart ment's publications. Nevertheless moBt of them stick to their work. An inquiry made in January last showed that 88 per cent of them had served more than a year, 67 per cent had serv ed m6re than two years, 42 per cent more than six years, four1 per cent more than 26 years and one per cent, or 1,300 of them, more than 36 years. erg and to collect information in ev ery way. " Then there are state statis tical agent who report for their states as a whole, and the state agri cultural college,' which gather a vast amount of information for the nation al department : ' The most recently adopted plan of the guyernment to place agricultural agents in every one of the agricultural counties in, the country will tend to strengthen the value of the govern ment reports'. Along with their local work it is one of the duties of each of these county 'agents to keep the de partment of agriculture in the closest touch with afafirs relating to agricul ture and its 'accounterments. But withalli the reports from Wash-. ington did not purport to be other than estimates. . When the .system oi county agricultural agents is com plete, with; a representative in, every agricultural 'county, perhaps the de partment will issue something more than estimates .but as the matter now stands the monthly bulletins are of an inestimable value to the man who makea a study of them and it is the wise farmer who takes advantage of the knowledge they give him. Two years ago, a dozen bathing beaches, strung along the lake shorn, were thought sufficient to care for the great crowds whleh'sought relief from the heat by a cooling plunge in the, water. This year other beaches were added, including a one-half mile beach at Jackson park.' But it wasn't suffi cient. The play goers of Chicago need ed more. Crowds of young folks and old folks also, stood in line on various Sundays and afternoons for hours at a time awaiting their chances for a dip in the Jake. The locker space at Diversey and Jackson park, bathing beaches, nex; year will . be almost double. The beaches will be stretched several hun dred feet. Dredges wilt increased the size of the beacnes.
