East Every Week.
' PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 29. (Spe
cial) Pacific northwest fruit will
hereafter get the best service that the
railroad and refrigerator car compan
ies can give. :''' , '
'Announcement to that effect was
made today to officials of the North
western Fruit exchange of this city
by J. W. McClymonds, general agent
of the Pacific Fruit express with head
quarters at San Francisco. ' .
According to the news given out by
Mr. McClymonds, Oregon-Washington-Idaho
fruit shipments destined for
the east will hereafter reach its des
tination in much quicker time. From
Granger, Idaho, to Council Bluffs, Ia
the shipments will be handled each
week on the special trains that will
likewise carry all of the California
fruits. The service will alternate be
tween the Chicago and North-Western
.and the Illinois Central, each road
running a special train every other J
week. '
The announcement is perhaps the
most important ever given out by the
shipping interests of this section. For
years the fruit industry here has been
held back to a very considerable de
gree by the failure of the transport
tion companies to provfde adequate
transportation facilities for eastern
shipments. ;.' .
The present announcement means a
vast improvement in the service and
it is anticipated that still greater re
forms will be shown after while. Just
at present peach growers will receive
most of the benefits of the change.
There are indications of a very good
market for Pacific northwest peaches
at eastern centers within a short per
iod. While the present demand is
limited, the outlook is far more hope
ful than any of the shipping interests
had anticipated a short time ago.
Even on the basis of present prices
for Colorado peaches in the Eastern
markets, it would Be profitable, to
ihip Oregon-Washington-Idaho stock
in that direction.

Notice is; hereby given ' that the
county board of equalization for Un
ion county, Oregon, will attend at the
court house, La Grande, on Monday,
September 8. 1913, and publicly exam
ine the assignment roll, correct all er
rors in valuation, descriptions or qual
ities of land, lata or other property, as
assessed' by the' county assessor, and it
shall be the duty of all persons inter
ested to appear., at the time and place
given.
All persons having grievances re
garding the 1913 assessment may ap
pear before such board and present
their affidavits containing grounds
for complaint All such affidavits must
be presented during the first week of
the meeting of the board.

price the past day or two. Today there
is a lower figure on celery, fresh to
matoes are down to $1.00 per box, cab
bage sells for 2 cents, peaches run
from 75 cents to $1.25, watermelons
are a half cent cheaper but scarce at
that figure, grapes are cheaper. :
