but other cars will. When the fire
bar passes a given point, people rush
over, .crossings and on the street and
not expecting other cars to pass at
high rates of speed, are constantly in
great danger. . This has been the prac
tice every time there is a fire and I
am going to cause the arrest and pros
ecute the next person who violates
this law. I hope to have it stopped
before someone is killed. Two men
very narrowly escaped death Satur
day night because a volunteed fireman
drove a machine at top speed through
a crowd of people." ;

Hampson, a local engineer, who died
in Portland last week.

The deceased was 45 years old and is
survived by his wife and two daugh
ters.

were in the city last night at the
Foley. Mr.. Stuller is a member of
government. The reported killings led

North Powder, and Mrs. York, a land

city on business today, appearing in

missed today by Judge Van Fleet, who
held that she did not intend to try

Walla Walla, Aug. 25. Fire in the
basement of the Baumister building
did damage estimated at $25,000 to
day. The stock of the Stanley Whole
sale house was destroyed and the store
of W. H. Seyer, sporting goods, was
badly damaged by smoke and water.

Humphries has instructed Prosecuting
Attorney Murphy to issue criminal
complaint for contempt of court
