serving a term in the. penitentiary for
highway robbery,' committed in this
county, fled from the institution yes
terday afternoon and he has not yet
been apprehended.
According to the prison officials a
number of convicts employed at
brickyard a week ago had planned a
wholesale break, and Arstel, who was
a trusty, had been confided in and
was to participate in the break. 1 in
stead of joining them, he divulged the
whole plan to the authorities with the
result that all the convicts involved
were taken away from the brickyard
and confined to the prison.
Learning that Arstel had betrayed
them, the convicts threatened to "get
him at the first opportunity. Fearing
that they would execute their threats
the officials did not incarcerate Ars
tel in the prison, but allowed him to
sleep in the barn and to work in the
brickyard nights. The threats prey
ed on his mind, lay the officials, and
fearing the convicts would kill him
despite the precautions taken, he took
advantage of the liberties-granted him
and fled. i
Arstel had served a previous term
in the institution. He was accom
panied fn his flight by Fred Justilla,
sentenced from Lane county for lar
ceny. Justilla had been recommend
ed for a parole 'by the parole board,
and would have been given his free
dom just as soon as Governor West
could 'pass on the recommendation,
say the officials.
Prune Crop Is Promising.
Mosier, Ore., Aug. 18. Harvesting
of the Mosier prune crop will begin
Monday. The district shipped through
the Mosier Fruit Growers' association
15,000 boxes of green prunes last sea
son, and this year's harvest will yield
as heavily. R. D. Charfield, manager
of the association, says the crop of this
year is of better quality than that of
last season. The price offered this
year is said to be satisfactory to grow
ers, who are optimistic over the fruit
outlook. One of the largest prune
orchards of the district is that owned
by Mark A. Mayer. Crews, of pickers
have been drawn from the Hood River
valley and other adjacent f rujt dis
trict, where work at the present time
is slack in the orchards.

- Hobble Skirt Has Victim..
Medford. Ore., Aug 19. Trying to
take a .long step in her first hobble
skirt yesterday, Miss Mabel Norling,
IS years old, tripped and fell, striking
the floor of the room with such force
that .die sustained a broken arm and
several minor bruises.
Miss Norling had just put on the
new creation nd was to attend a Sun
day social fathering, when, at the first
step, her feet became tangled in the
closely confined toilette ,nd she fell,
striking vhe aim of a chair.
In spite of her catastrophe the
young woman declares she is not dis
couraged and as soon as she is able
to move about the new skirt will be
used again.

Grain Yield Good In Polk.
Atrlie, Ore., Aug. 19, Polk county's
grain crops have shown good yields.
Oats threshed from 20 to 60 bushels
an acre, and vetch and oats combined
averaged 25 bushels an acre. Wheat,
of which there is a small acreage, has
made a fair average.
Where oats and vetch were planted
together, the yield showed about one-
half or each. Along the sloughs the
vetch outgrew the oats and was en
tirely straight vetch. Later is fell on
the ground on account of no oats to
hold it up, and was greener than, us
ual when threshed.
Large Quantity of Wool in Baker.
Baker, Aug. 20. On account of late
rains. Grant county wool growers did
not shear their flocks as early this
year ns formerly, consequently their
clip djd not reach the Buker market
in time for sales day.
However, the wool is here and there
are about 90,000 pounds in warehouses r i
