Retail Department Phone Main 8 For Lumber, Lath Shingles, Sash and D oors Ruberoid Roofing State Fair Offer Fine Prizes to the Youngster for Exhibits. By N. C. MARIS. - ' (Field Worker Industrial Fairs.) JSalem, Aug. 20. (To the boys and girls of Union county) : Last week. I reminded you of the near approach of the state fair and your home fair. I hope you have gotten busy with your gardens, your bird bouses, your tables yotir poultry, your sewing, your bat ing, etc. If. you do not Rave a copy of the state fair prise lift, call on your county school superintendent, or write to State Superintendent J. A. Church ill, Salem, Oregon, and he will send you one.. Read the prize list through carefully and see what you can do best, if you have not already done so, and select, the classes you are going to compete in. Do not overlook the spe cial prizes in the back part of the book. You will find some very at tractive prizes among them, including the Shetland pony for . the best live stock exhibit; a cream separator for the best two pounds of butter; Scotch collies for the best fat lamb; an in . cubator for the largest and best poul try exhibit, etc., etc. If you are going to enter the pig feeding contest it is tints , you had your pigs on full feed. There are two valuable prizes offered in the pig xeeaing contest, and tne boys wno en ter this contest will gain valuable ex- perience, besides making good money oat of their pigs. With pigs selling at $10.00 -a hundred, you are almost in Rockefeller's class, if you own two or three pigs. There are three' nice prizes for the best sow and litter of pigs, the first being a hundred dol lar Jersey call. We hope to see a large exhibit of pigs and poultry at the state fair this year, as well as at the local fairs. In keeping account worth while. ' The pig contest is open to girls as well as to boys; so look out, boys, for some girls are good pig feeders. At some of the local schools fairs in Oregon last year the girls beat the boys with their pigs. It was "tit' for tat," though, for the boys some times won over the girls with their bread, butter and jelly. - . ,.' . Oregon boys and girls led every state in the Union with their school fairs last year, and we are expecting them to keep up their record this year. I am sure you are too patri otic to disappoint us.
