(Spe cial) That Lawrence Cartwright left his home yesterday morning with the deliberate intention of killing his sis-tar-in-taw,, Mrs. George Cartwright, and his nephew, David Powell, seems certain -br the light of developments since the tragedy'..,,. On the morning of the crime, Lawrence Cartwright and bis wife had a quarrel over some mat ter, so the wife states, and shortly af terwards as he looked out a window Cartwright saw Powell riding on his horse, going towards his brother's home on the Brown ranch. He immed iately took l.V automatic revolver and in reply to a question of his wife, stat ed that he was going to "get" pow ell. , - ' ,''V' He- disconnected -the telephone so his wife could not give warning, and rode towards his brother's home. George Cartwright talked his brother out of the idea of killing Powell, and it was thought by all that the trouble was over. Presently . Lawrence Cartwright turned to his brother's wife and ask ed: "Are. you going berrying with us?,'?. "No," Bhe answered; "certainly not after the way you have acted this morning.!' "All right," said Cartwright and as he spoke drew his gun and fired two shots at the woman, killing her in stantly. Powell was. his next intended victim and as he fired at him the let ter ran into a woodshed, his pursuer emptying his gun at him. Cornering Powell in the shed, as he was reload ing, the former begged Cartwright not to shoot, but he replied, "I came to kill you and I'm going to do it." Powell then find and as he ran several more shots were fired by his assailant. He reached his horse and got away to the Richard Cartwright' ranch. Lawrence aCrtwright then went out to the road, and blew his own brains out. Powell is now in the hospital at Huntington, his parents being with him, and it is believed that his chanc es for recovery are slinght, although this afternoon he was holding his own, according to report from the hospital. Freewater-Milton. Fruit News. Freewater, Ore., Aug. 15. Prune picking has commenced and will be in full swing the latter part of the week. There will be only a half crop, com pared with last year's crop. The prices will range from $30 to $35 per ton. About 150 pickers, mostly women and children, will be empfoyed in the pack ing houses, and half that number will be employed in the prune orchard of W. N. Hurst, who markets his own fruit. The pear crop will also be short, Bartlett pears which are shipped green will sell at $1.75 per iate. Canta loupes and watermelons have been on the market for about two weeks andj have been selling at $3 per crate. They will be shipped out in carload lots at the close of the week. Peaches are plentiful but the big picking will not be until the end of next week, and no quotations" have as-yet been given out. - " :.' .' Phones to Connect Four Forests. Bend, Ore., Aug. 15. Supervisor M. L.,Merrit, of'the Deschutes national forest left here yesterday for Blue riv er, o the west side of the Cascades, to meet with the supervisors of the Cascade, Santiam and Umpqua forests and Assistant District Forester Flory. They will discuss matters' in connec tion with a telephone system connect ing the four forests. A line is now being built to the summit of the Cas cades from the west side along the McKenzie road, and the Deschutes forest officials will construct a line from this side to meet it, and also a line to the summit to meet that from Detroit, over the Santiam pass road. These two lines will require the s'tring Jng of 21 miles of wire. Tomatoes Grown at 3800 Feet.. Bend, Ore.,' Aug. 15.
