. The 1913 harvest is on and will bo
in full blast by the fore part of the
week, says the Elgin Recorder. Com
bined harvesters have been running in
Grande Ronde valley - all week and
headers have b?en at work for sever
al days. Grain is ripening rapidly in
that section and if weather conditions
continue good the harvesting of the
banner crop- of Union county will soon

Binding operations started in the
Flat section last week, and headers
have ben in oneratii for several
days. In fact, the gram has ripened
on the Flat as errly this season as in
Grande Ronde, and the farmers of that .
favored section will have their crops
cared for at an early dSte. The same ,
conditions apply to all farming sec
tions surrounding Elgin, 'i -.'
A ride through the wheat fields of
Union county at this time of thn year
is well worth taking, and to those un-'
acquainted with the productive quali
ties of the county would be a marvel, i

Prolific crops have not' only been
nroduced in Grande Ronde and on thej
Flat, but in the smaller farming sec-.;

So far sufficient labor has been se-,
cured, but it is feared that when hart'

pulse of th pear market" at this time
is one of the most exciting of voca
tions. . The temperature of the trade
ranges from blood heat to icy cold
and it's up to the sales management
to know when the pulse is at its high
est and when it will begin to drop.
To know to the fraction of a cent
what the markets thousands of miles
away will pay for a product they have
never seen, and several weeks "in ad
vance of shipment, is a problem that
causes the muscles to twitch and the
hair to disappear. This is the condi
tion nf the near trade at the mo
ment. Anyone can sell a product atj
what the buyer is willing to give for it
but it takes a more thorough knowl-!
edge of the situation and the desires of
the trade to ascertain definitely wheth
er they will stand for an advance of
perhaps a dime a box.
Today the Northwestern Fruit ex
change of this city sold a big lot of
cars of Rogue River Bartlet pear: : t
the extreme high water mark of the
season to date $1.90 per box, f. ol b..

vance to insure the shipper against
non-acceptance of the fruit after ship
ment. . This nrice was obtained only
after local selling interests had abso
lutely refused to talk to the eastern
trade at all regarding pears unless
something ahove $1.85 was offered.
To give the easterner's an " idea of
the real strength of the situation and
the excessive demand fdr pears, 2.03
was asked but some of the early bid
ders were allowed to get in on the
ground floor at $1.90. This makes
an advance of about 40 cents a box for
pears since the present season started
and the end is still obscured.
