Columbia Joe, well known old .In dian medicine man, was found lying dead by the side of the road near Ta tuilla yesteroay morning about 9:00 o'clock but there was nothing about the appearance of the body nor no circumstances to indicate that death had . not come from natural causes, says the Pendleton East Oregonian The old man had been in the city Saturday afternoon and had started for the reservation. It is presumed that he became ill, tied his horse by the roadside and lay down to die. Some boys observed the horse yester day morning and, upon investigation found the body. They notified the authorities and Undertaker John Ba ker went out after the body. It was buried this afternoon in the cemetery south of the agency. Columbia Joe was about 75 years old and was a picturesque looking old ' Indian. He was a Columbia rivr Indian but had been allotted land on the local res ervation. He was a medicine man and a number of years ago was ac cused by George Marshall, anothei Indian, of being responsible for the death of the latter's wife which oc curred in the John Day valley, Mar shall declared that Dr. Joe was in the mountains and scattered bad medicine in the valley and he threatened, to kill the old man. The wild hay is nearly all harvested and farmers have com menced cutting their second crop of alfalfa hay. Ladd Canyon is com pletely dotted with hav stacks. Considering the weather, Mr. Un barger had quite a good many at his park picknicking Sunday during the day. Miss Verda Graham has gone to North Powder to spend two or three weeks visiting with relatives and friends.
