He was out of the race before he reached Baker, so far as taking a paying place was concern ed. " ; Zweifel, of La Grande, had trouble after leaving Union and though he patched and. went on, it was only to have more trouble and he was finally forced to quit at Haines on the going trip. Complete destruction of his rear tire was responsible. Sieg, of Baker, came back in about the best physical condition of anyone and was within a fraction of a second of beating Walker's time, Vehrs rid ing for Parker, hit a puncture and found he had no pump to restore the wind. This was at North Powder. Hill, an experienced motorcyclist had trouble much of the way, and al though he finished he was well in the rear. Walker, of Pendleton, was bruised the most severely of any and was badly exhausted when he pulled over the line. There were serious ac cidents to the machines in a few in stances, but the race was replete with spills. The race was so unique, so sensationally interesting, so well ar ranged, so entertaining, that ."Pat" SeCor and those who helped him stage it were showered with congratulations. Pat made good. It was one of the best "stunts" La Grande as a city, has stood sponsor for, and that interest was not confined to La Grande alone, is manifested by the crowds that surged the course between here and Baker. Protest against the award of third place to Walker has been made but late this afternoon no definite action has been taken on the decision. Walker broke a front wheel early in the race and obtained a substitute wheel from a noncontestant. This is held to be the grounds for protest. . If . Walker is disqualified Seig will get third mon ey and Olson retain second place. RACE NUMBERS GOOD. Fine Entertainment Given Spectators Dring the Afternoon. The whole of yesterday's program centered around the motorcycle races there were other attractions that were enjoyed by the large crowd of people. . In the first harness race which was a 2:30 trot, two in three, halt miie Hat's, Amy McKinney took t'ie first heat in 1:20, lost the second to Mon ti sano Boy, who made it in 1:16 1-2, and claimed the third heat in 1:18. The free for all pace showod both speed and class with Allerdaw. Tama rack The Red, and Delmas starting. Delmas squared away and did beau tiful work taking every heat, the first in 1:07, the second in 1:01 and the third in 1:02 3-4. The last heat broke the track record for this year in the state. : Teddy McGregor and John Bacon were the starters in the 2:30 oace and John Bacon took two heats with case at 1:17 and 1:15. . a A half mile running race was won by Lataranta, with Dave Weber second and Eva McGinnis third time .52. Quarter mile dash finished with Lataranta first, Homelight, second; Edna Brown, third; and Laura Mills fourth time .25 1-4. I A three-eighths mile dash had four starters and the finish was Dave Web ber first; Billy Wallace, second; Whit-, man, third; and Blaze fourth Hnsj VK In the cowboy pony race Thelma Loe won first, Sam, second; Brownie, third. Miss Osborne of Union, and Roy Peebler of Ladd Canyon, ran the re lay with honors to the latter owing; to one of Miss Osborne's horses losing Us head and starting around the track the wrong way. . . The hippodrome race had two start ers Ben Corbett and R. Henry. Cor bett was easy wv.ner. Several exMbition bucking contests were pulled off with John Spain in the saddle, after which H W. B. Smith, of union, entered two teams in a Roman chariot race. It was a stirring event and the half mile was made in l:0d 1-2 both teams finishing almost even. Only a few minutes elapsed before the balloon ascension which was a thorough success including the para chute leap, and the large crowd left the grandstand singing praises for Secretary SeCor for furnishing such an excellent program for the afternjen.
