Fire Started by Explosion But Steam
Extinguishes It. .
Joseph, July 17. (Special) An ex
plosion of a forty horse power boiler
occurred af the O'Bryant saw mill yes
terday. , There were several men em
ployed in the mill and it was exceed
ingly good luck that none were injured.
A slight fire was started by the ex
plosion, the out-rushing steam witb 1

Hay harvest is on. Most farmers be
gan last Monday and owing to the
ideal weather the hay is being stack
ed in first class condition.
New crop .baled hay. is being de
livered. Several crops are being baled
from windrows. .
A fishing party composed of W. D.
Beck, J. E. Long, E. G. Cochrane and
Geo. Ensminger have just returned
from Grande Ronde lake and report
a catch of 500 nice trout
The J. F. O'Bryant warehouse is
fast nearing completion and will be
ready for the hay crop.
' The Political Science club presented
the city with a public drinking foun
tain which was installed with appro
priate ceremonies.
F. A. Buckel, agent for the O.-W,
R. & N. and wife are visiting relatives
in the middle states.
Mrs. Wm., Haskin and daughter

Come to the Good Time meeting of Eastern Oregon
where the word "Welcome" carries its true meaning

permit of giving the entire time to
the subject of commission government
without any restriction from political
fights. It is eenerallv felt that the
i new charter would have been adopted
(two years ago had it not been for the
i hot mayorality fight that was on and
.which caused the commission govern
ment issue to be overshadowed.
! In preparing the new charter for
submission this fall the workers will
have the benefit of the work done two
years ago. For the most part the
charter submitted at that time will
still suffice. However, several changes
will be imperative because of the
granting of the suffrage to women and
because of the change in the date of
the election, It is also possible that
upon full consideration the old draft
may be altered in other features.
At the meeting Thursday steps will
be taken looking to drafting the new
charter and getting it before the peo
ple under the initiative. '

Pendleton Wants Commission.
Pendleton, July 16. In order to get
plans under way for the submission of
a commission government charter to
the people this fall a mass meeting of
friends of commission government is
called for Thursday evening. The
meeting will be held in the convention
room at the city hali and all. citizens
favoring the new plan are invited to
attend and participate. Ladies are
especially invited to be present.
The call for the meeting was made
bv President J. V. Tallman of the
Commercial club at the request of a
number of friends of the commission
plan who met informally last evening
at the office of Judge S. A. Lowell
Mr. Tallman was one of those present
and at the request of those present
agreed to make the call. However
the meeting will not be a Commercial
club affair but will be open to all who
favorcommission rule. It is desired
to have a representative gathering
and workingmen as well as business
and professional men are asked to be
present. The meeting will be called
to rder at 7:30.
Though the definite plans for sub
mitting the commission charter have
not yet been worked out it seems to
be the general sentiment among com
niswn,, "nvmmcnt fidvocates that a
pedal election should be held in Oc
ther and the fate of the new charter
decided at that time. The plan is
