Mr. Sykes was in La Grande and a
large gathering of union members of
this locsil heard.- him. A delightful
dinner was served and from every
phase the meeting was. a splendid one.
At Union Today.
Mr. Sykes is in Union today where
a meeting is in progress, and E. S.
Norrifi of this city, is one of those in
attendance. Next Saturday the farm
. ers meet at Cove and again Mr. Sykes
and probably President Swift will be
in attendance.
Brakeman's Assailant Captured.
Word i has been received -here that
. the hobo who stabbed Brakeman Kra
mer Monday night, has been captured
at Castle Rock. Kramer, who was
substituting on eastbound No. 12 for
Jack Allison, was stabbed just over
the heart and the kii'f? pierced the
left lung. The train had stopepd on
account of engine troubles and .the
brakeman had gone forward. He no
ticed a hobo on the tank and ordered
him off. As lie jumped off, the man
: lunged at. Kramer with a knife and
then made a getaway. The incident
occurred between Portland and Hood
River. Kramer was taken to the lat-
: ter city and is said, to be in a serious

' Fitchner Sale Pending.
The visit of Tom O'Hara, scout for
the Cincinnati team, to Walla Walla
; has resulted in negotiations by the
major league club for the purchase
of Fitchner, ex-Spud speed artist, and
' a deal is now pendingv Fitchner went
to North Yakima when the La Grande
team trew up.

the people of the State of Oregon,
. . Be it enacted by the legislature as

Section 1. That section 6458 of
Lord's Oregon Laws be and the same
is hereby amended so as to read as fol
lows:
Sec. 6458. It shall be the duty of
each road supervisor in each road dis
trict in this state, in addition to the
duties heretofore prescribed by law
to ascertain from time to time and
know whether or not there is in his
district any weed known as the Rus
sian thistle, the' Canada thistle, the
Chinese thistle, or sisymbrium altiss-
inum (called white or Jim Hill mus-!
tard), cockel burr' (known as the dag-l
ger cockel burr), atrisplex argentiathe real ' property included therein
(called silver salt brush), and he shall
as he ascertains that there is any of
such weed, and before any thereof had
shed its bloom or commenced to form
the seed, serve or cause to be serv
upon the owner of the land or the
land adjoining a road or highway to
the center thereof, if he be known and
residing within the county, and if not
upon the occupant of the premises ot

of such weed or wpeds upon said land
or said land adjoining a road or high
way, to completely remove same, it
shall be the duty of such road super-'
vistor and he shall have authority, to
?n upon said land or road or highway
calling to his assistance such help rp;
he may deem necessary and cause said
weed or weeds to be extirpated from
said land or road or highway in such
a manner that it will be most effect
ive and work the least injury to the
land, but that will destroy said weed
and its seed and prevent the same
from in any way spreading to any ad
