Reports From East Indicate Local
Crops are Exceptionally Good.
Owners of potato land and growing
crops of this valley are much enthused
at the likelihood of . a good potato
market this year. The local crop prom
ises immense output on sand soil and
heavier ground, alike, and reports from
the East indicate there are several
crop failures there. B. A. Benham of
the La Grande Investment company
has obtained reports from the princi
pal potato districts and all indicate
there is eoine to be a shortage of
"spuds" in the east.

Portland, July 1. Most of the. time
at the World's Conference today was
taken up by sectional conferences on
the family,, peact, capital and labor.
Four recommendations tending toward
a change in the attitude of hurr.anity
toward war were made by a special
commission on peace today, There will

' Rebels Ignore Foreign Flags. ;'
; Mexico City, July 1. Dispatches
frotn Durango say that forty women
were captured in that city, last week
and committed suicide to escape from
the indignitaries to which they. Were
subjected by the rebel .troops. ' It is
reported that the rebels ignored all
foreign flags. One Englishman was
killed and several Americans wounded.
More Officials Suspended.
San Francisco, July 1. -The suspen
sion of four more police officers Who
are charged by bunco men with re
ceiving hush money, was announced
today by the police commissioner. The
men involved are Patrolman ' Louis
Balletto, Jack Gleason, Detectives Ed
Mills and Charles Brown. The com
mission took action as a result of the
assertions made by Michael Gallo, and
Carlo Cardano two convicted bunco
men, who assert that they paid them
money on numerous occasions. .
