The weather is so wet that there is
not much doing out here. A great
many of the farmers have some of
their alfalfa hay mowed Which has
probably gotten spoiled in '.the rain,
and there is not many signs of the
.weather clearing yet for a while.
Strawberries are holding their own and
the early cherries are ripening never
theless. :;" .."..i.o
Mr. Linebarger is planning on hav
ing a big celebration on the fourth
of July. , There will probably be some
speaking and dancing during the day
and , they are planning on serving
meals to those who do not bring their
dinner. The Spencer boys of La
Grande, have the hall rented and will
conduct the evening dance and meals
will also be served during the even
ing. : ;
Little Helen Peebler has been quite
sick f 01 several days with a disease
known as shingles. ' ;
Miss Mary Warnick and little niece
Margaret Warnick, of La Grande,
have been visiting several days with
Mrs. James McClure.

Christina Linebarger have been visit
ing their sisters, Mrs. Alta Wiabuin
and Mrs. Winnie Lowman, resp active

Columbus, 0., June 27 Secretary of
State Charles H. Graves this month
will open and take personal charge of
the largest summer school in politics
in America. He will have on his list
of enrolled students t VTCC '"0 vol-,
ers t' zix.i c2 Ohio. His task
will uo vi.at of conducting- a course

fore the voters of Ohio next fall. To
do, this effectively he has been given
an appropriation of $50,000 by the
people of the state.
Not only will Secretary Graves in
struct the people on their rights and
privileges in the fall election, but he
must also, with rigid fairness and im
partiality, see that each voter is giv
en every opportunity to study fully
both sides of every measure that is
to be submitted to the people for ap
proval or rejection. He must mail to
every voter pamphlets containing the
arguments advanced in favor of each
submitted measure and at the same
time mail a pamphlet containing the
arguments against the measures as
drawn up by the foes of the bill.
Already Secretary Graves' prelim
inary duties in this course of political
study are far from light, and the peri
od of the submission of referred meas
ures has not yet arrived. As it stands
he must see that the Ohio voters are
properly instructed on the merits of
four constitutional amendments, two
providing for different forms of the
"short" ballot, one for the exemption
of public bonds and another -making
women eligible for certain state po
sitions. Besides these two other
amendments, one calling for a classi
fication of the general property tax
and another for a smaller general as
sembly are now being initiated and
will be submitte d within a few weeks.
He will also have to instruct the
people on the referred measures. One
of these is a referendum on the work
in gm en's compensation act, passed by
the state legislature, which is going
to be referred back to the people, for
final action. Other measures that are
now being referred are bills seeking to
disenfranchise students in educational
institutions, the Cunningham agricul
tural commission bill and several tax
ation measures.
