Three Thousand Turners la Men
Classes to Participate.
Denver, Colo., June 25. The great
est meet of German turners in the his
tory of the United States began here
today when the 81st Olympiad of the
North American Gymnastic . union ep
ened at the Lakeside stadium. The
great turnf est will last until June 80.
Three thousand turners in the .men's
classes, 1,000 women turners, 1,000 in
the "elderly classes,'' and 8,000 Denver
school children will participate in the
huge pageant of gymnastic games and
various drills. In addition to the gym
nastic program a chorus of 600 voices,
the singers from almost every state
in the union; and thousands of Color
ado singers will take part in the saeng
ado singers will , take part in the
saengerfest which is on the program
for tomorrow. It was estimated that
60,000 visitors besides the participants
were in Denver today. .
The turnfest was formally opened
this morning with a meeting of the
judges of the contests Which will start
tomorrow morning. Tonight the turn
ers will assemble in the big city audi
torium from which place a, torchlight
procession will start. The procession
will be reviewed by Governor Amnions
the mayor of Denver, and the officers ,
of the Gymnastic union. ".. I
A feature of tonight's ceremonies .
will be the singing of "Die Lorelei,"
the bid German folksong, by a chorus
of 2,000 Denver school children. There
will be addresses by Governor Am
nions, the officials of the union, the)
impressive ceremony .of ."delivering
the golden key," and the singing of j
V i ne Star spangled Banner," by - a
chorus of . 350 male voices, several,
men turners. '

remainder Of the China pheasants ar
rived in Wallowa last Friday from the
state game farm at Corvallis. The
shipment consists" Of four "cmtW of
China, pheasants, which were placed
on the private land state game pre
serve east of this city and also one
crate of Golden 'pheasants were re
ceived by Harry , W. Harris, superin
tendent of the Walla national forest
The latter birds are approachable, be
ing semi-tame. . Mr. Harris will build
a park on his ranch and keep them in
captivity. These birds are small, and
with their chicken mother are quite a
novelty. The fish and game commis
sion wish to create as much interest
as possible in game and its protec

Mill Arising From Ashes.
-Already the new plant of At Bak
er White ' Pine Lumber company is
arising from the ashes of the destroy
ed mill, and if the work Continues to
progress at the present rate, it will
be running again by the first of Au
gust, if not sooner. The weather yes
terday caused . the ' enforced lay-off
of the Concrete men,' but their part of
the work has gone along well and
the first floor is fast nearing com
pletion. The new structure is being
built- even better than the one de
stroyed and will be more substantial
in every detail. About 75 men are
employed and nothing is being left un
done to finish the work as soon as pos
