Leadership and the "Pull-together" Spirit Do Great Things in Union. When it comes -to pulling off the biggest stunts Union for its size cer tainly deserves the first honors. Last Saturday the special train ad vertising the Union Stock Show was one of the most successful bootsing acts ever staged in Eastern Oregon. The special train of six cars carry ing fifty saddle horses, six Shetland ponies, and ver nearly one hundred Union people visited North Powder, Haines, Baker and Telocaset, giving the citizens of each a hearty wel come to spend June 5, 6, 7, in the r J T? nniln Vollov fnum . . At each stop, exceut Telocaset, where only a 15 minute stop was made, the horses were unloaded and the fifty horsemen and horsewomen paraded through the streets while those on foot distributed posters and hand bills, offered personal invita tions, gave premium books to pros pective exhibitors, tagged everybody with the "Meet Us Again", tag, and dispensed gaily ' colored .pennants. Just tefore loading the horses speeches were made and special fea tures of the coming show announced. John Spain, the world, champion buckaroo being introduced as one of the leaders. , The program of the day was very unusual and clearly as effective as it ( was unique. The - Union "Boys" now Sow to take the' part of agree able visitors as well as entertaining hosts. Indications point to a record breaking attendance to the show this year, and the directors will have their hands full from now on to. get ready. However they promise a visit to La Grande some time this week probably via automobiles. ADVERTISEMENT FOR BIDS Sealed proposals will be received at the office of the County Clerk of Union county, Oregon, at La Grande, Oregon, up to 12:00 o'clock M of the 4th day of June, 1913,for the furn ishing of all tools, labor and mater ial necessary for the following work: I. Take down the old bridge near Cove, furnish all tools, labor and ma terial except the fabricated steel superstructure now at La Grande, for a 60 foot span on foundations, ac cording to plans and specifications now on file. . TaKe down the old bridge near Summerville, point up the present masonry piers, put six-inch concrete cap on wails, or, put in new concrete abutments, furnish 'all tools, labor and material, except the fabricated steel for the superatructed which is now at La Grande, for a new 60 foot span at the site of the old bridge. All material to be furnished and work done in accordance with the plans and specifications on file at the office of the County ClerkLin the city of La Grande, Oregon. Each bidder shall deposit with his bid a cashier's check for five per cent of the amount of his proposal, as a guarantee of good faith. All bids shall be sealed and addressed to the County Judge of Union Coun ty, Oregon, and endorsed: "Bids for the building of the Cove and Sum merville Bridges." . A 100,000 bushel grain elevator will be erected this summer by the Farm ers' union at North Powder. They also will build a store building in which they will handle general mer chandise. This announcement comes at the. end of a very busy and pros perous year for the Union and at the beginning of what promises to be an even .better harvest North Powder and Surrounding territory is one of the most pros perous sections in Eastern Oregon, this year as usual. Business is good and judging by the present condit ions of hay, grain, and, live stock, nothing can prevent the coming year from producing equally pleasing re sults. r.. .. . ;, v.. 4 Big Shipping Point. North Powder is rapidly coming to the front as ail important shipping point. Not that jt is a freight cen ter, but from the faqt that , more care are loaded there than from any station between it ; and ... Portland: Hay, grain, flour, horses, tattle 'and other products of that territory are being shipped. During the past sea son the Farmers' Union; alone has handled over 45,000 tons of freight. A good deal of improvement will be carried on in North Powder this summer. Haines, May 28. (Special) The two balers have begun operation? in this vicinity since the price of hay, has advanced. ' There is possibly a thousand tons of hay to be shipped from this point this spring. : Since the Farmer's warehouse burned at this place some time since several parties are contemplating building warehouses. There will be two and possibly three warehouses begun in the near future. B. E. Harder, cashier of the Bank of Haines, left for Seattle Saturday evening for the purpose of bringing his wife home. . Mrs. Harder was recently operated on for appendicitis at the Seattle General hospital . R. P. Anderson, of the firm of Dodd & Anderson Produce company, left for Connell, Wash., in response to a summons by telegraph stating that his father was very low. ' N. E. Dodd and L. H. Zigler went to Walla Walla to take part in the dedication being held by the Elks in that city. McCullough has returned to Haines after an extended business trip to Boise and Nampa at which points he has an interest in cattle. .
