QUALITY GROCER I Washington, May 23. Represen tative Thomas, of Kentucky, the oth er day was engaged in that pleasant occupation entitled, "Playing T'other Side." He had just labelled Minority Leader Mann, "the b'ewhiskered gent from Illinois." He had accused Mann of "rattling around, spouting mixed metaphors and vapid nothingnesses" and the house,- always ready to laugh, was convulsed with laughter. : Repre sentative Hardy, of Texas,' during a momentary pause, touched the ora tor on the sleeve and whispered earn estly 'to him. Thomas nodded, reach ed in his hip pocket ana pulled out a plug of "chawin'," which he passed over. Hardy took -a generous bite and passed it back. Thomas took a long, doleful slant at the piece which remained, slipped it deftly into his cheek, rotated it into place and re sumed, "Now, Mr. Chairman, take the gentleman from Kansas, who sports the sun-kissed locks, " but the roars of laughter made him stop; These are bad days for United States senators who formerly were satisfied to uphold their own and the dignity of that august body without any too frequent . associations : with such annoying things as constituents. Alsc they are preparing to take an active part in the congressional campaign work which heretofore has largely been done by the representatives who were compelld to depend on the peo ple for their jobs and not on mem bers of the various state legislatures. The senators ' are ' now in the same boat with the members of the lower house and the way they are bustling about with big ideas ' and - helpful hints is really ludicrous when one ro members the old days when such things were drawn from haughty senators only by means of dentists forceps, And what's more, the sen ators not only are seeking a larger representation on congressional cam paign committee.s They are going down deep into their pockets for real money. Murdock Suffers Joke. , This is a story of "Alfalfa Bill" Murray, ; former cow-puncher, who came out of Oklahoma as a con gressman. Victor Murdock of Kan sas, doesn't like this yarn a bit for it was at Murdock's expense that "Al falfa Bill" got a. change of name. Murray wears his mustache, hair and cigars long. His vest is always JiaLf unbuttoned. When talking to people he slaps 'em on the back, and calls 'em "Old Pard." He loves to have others call him "BilL" : The tariff debate was closing. Orators were still orating and " time ' bug heavily. Murray, remembered a "good one" he hadn't told Represen tative Murdock so he went over to where the fiery headed Kansan sat, deposited himself partly on the arm of the chair and partly in Murdock's lap, with a huge arm thrown about Murdock's neck and shoulders. To make himself heard above the roar of verbal artillery Murray placed his lips close to Murdock's ear, thus bringing unconsciously into play, his ! long wiry mustache against . M.ir dock's cheek. To Murdock's credit, be it said he stood it, showing no sign except to grow red. Murray, all unconscious, finished the yarn and walked away. Murdock immediately rushed to the cloak room and wash ed his face. He is now called "Af fectionate . Bill." and J. A. Fee are representing the defendants. Judge Phelps yetserday also over ruled the demurrer filed by the de fendants in the case of W. L. Thomp son vs. Henry T. HiU'.and James Johns. In calling . the docket the case of the Farmers Bank of Weston vs. J. K. , Bartlett was dismissed without prejudice, that of S. A. Ash vs. D. C. Cowan was settled and dis missed and that of the Peoples Warehouse vs. A. H. Sunderman was dismissed at plaintiff's costs. Rheumatism Quickly Cured. ' "My sister's husband had an at tack of rheumatism in hia arm," writes a well known resident of New ton, Iowa. Until the supreme court has hand ed down a decision in the case of James Johns vs. the City of Pendle ton, the temporary injunction which is holding up the paving of west Webb and Raley streets will be sus tained. This much was intimated by Circuit Judge G. W. Phelps yester day afternoon when the attorneys in the cases of J. J. Baumgardner vs. the City et. al. and Elmer Reager vs. the City et al., concluded their argu ments upon the motion to dissolve the injunction. While the judge has not yet issued his ruling, he intimated strongly what it would be. He declared that, while he could see no reason why the temporary injunction should be sus tained, he was of the opinion that no harm would result to either party if the injunction were left in force until the supreme court had decided the Johns case, in which the same ques tion is involved. The plaintiffs in the Baumgardner and Reager cases contend that the patent on bitulithic precludes competition. R. R. John son and J. H. Ralcy are attorneys for the plaintiffs, while C. II.
