' Elgin, Ore., May 22. (Special) The weather remains supreme. The Elgin business men are busy making preparations f or a grand two day celebration in Elgin on the natal day. The committees' are doing ex work, even this early in the esason, and are going to Hi' celebration one of the marked events in the history of Elgin. There will be the usual attractions, of course, but by the way of novelty something new 'is being prepared.' For those coming from' a distance, will be a suitable camping ground, good water and in an ideal place for camping purposes. The Elgin band is practic ing several nights each week and is making a wonderful showing. , The women of the Presbyterian church will meet at Pastor Smit's residence for the purpose of organiz ing a missionar ysociety. Refresh ments will be served and an appre ciable time is expected. , , Ed. Kleine and associate boosters were in Elgin Wednesday noon doing some real live boosting for the Un ion Live Stock show. .V The Elgin Creamery, which was again opened for business, in March, under the splendid management of J. W. Rickford is rapidly forging to the front. Bickford has" been in the creamery business for the past 14 years and knows butter.. , . . .'On, her way home from her-brother's', Miss Tildia Hiigj of Pumpkin Ridge, was slightly1 injured. The cause of the accident was the scar ing :6t- her hor.se, which she . . was driving. The horse became frighten ed and ran, throwing the victim out and dragging her for some distance. A. G. Smith was a' business visitor in La Grande Wednesday evening; returning Thursday. Miss Alice Stoddard, who for the past two years has been teaching in the Elgin High School, the past one as principal, returned to her home in Portland Thursday evening. Miss Stoddard is a highly credited teacher, being a graduate of the University of Oregon.' She will teach next .year at Ontario, Oregon. Benjamin Hug, an. old resident of Summerville, is seriously ill, but with the medical aid he is receiving it is hoped that he will soon recover. L. B. Tuttle, editor of the Recor der, has recovered from the wrench that he gave his knee in the "No-Sox-Weary Willie" baseball game of a few weeks past. William Gent left Thursday even ing for La Grande. (Baker Herald.) When William Brent of the Cali fornia Corral at Second and Church streets opened the door of his room after' repeated invitations by the man to come out and repeated warn ings by himself, he found the stran ger ready to deal him a blow with a crow bar. Brent had a revolver ready, however, and he pulled the trigger once and the man faded away into the darkness without waiting for further argument. Just to make sure Brent fired two more shots and the man is believed to be running vet. Brent was retiring at 11 o'clock last night when he heard the man trying to get in, finally demanding that Brent let him in. Brent told the man to go away several times and when the intruder would not, he grasped his revolver and opened the door. The shooting followed.
