(Bakor Democrat) The Eastern Oregon Light and Power company has come out in the open to make a determined fight against the construction of a munic ipal lighting plant, and today will begin a campaign to convince the people that such a move on the part of the city commissioners would be the height of folly -nd detrimental to the best interests of the taxpay ers. Their "publicity campaign will be conducted by Mr. Glen Marston of Chicago, who arrived Sunday. The first gun of their campaign will be fired this morning, a display adver tisement in this paper announcing the same. To a cer tain extent this .is true, but on the other hand our company, as a heavy taxpayer , in the city, does not feel that it -wants to be assessed its pro rata portion to pay the cost of what we are certain will be a 'white ele phant and something the city com missioners and people generally will regret. "They say that the people have voted $25,000 bonds for the con struction of this plant, and that the commissioners are in duty bound to carry out their plan. This is true, but as a matter of fact this issue of bonds was authorized two years ago, and we believe that we can show the people good reasons for re pudiating their action at. the polls at that time. We will try to make our campaign against the , municipal j plant a campaign of education and believe.that we can convince .the peo- j pie that the construction of the same will be detrimental not only to the Eastern Oregon Light and Power company, but to the city at large, which, after all, is the more import- ant, and while some will disbelieve t it, our prime motive for action is from the standpoint of being heavy . taxpayers."
