palachian mountain until new the
government owns about 400,000 acres
prinicpally In the outhern Appala
chalns and In the White Mountain.
These lands are being bought pri
marily to protect navigation. Con
grew held. In providing for their pur
chase, that the constitution prohibits
the government from buyhg lands for
these eastern forests, excel at the
headwaters of navigable rivers, and
for the purpose of regulalng stream
flow and preventing the silttog "! of
the channels of commerce, yet the
prodiistlon of timber will a3so be
made one of the objects of applied
forestry as the government will
practice It on these areas. Not all
the lands is well timbered now, as
much of it has been culled or cut over,
but It Is expected the timber will fn
, crease In quantity and value under
the stimulus of proper forest manaee
ment and protection. A considerable
revenue will therefore be derived
from the sale of timber.
Many people have the Idea that the
forest service objects to the sale of
Imber from the national forests,
while on the contrary, timber sales
constitute a large source of revenue.
Two largi tracts of timber are now
being advertised for sale dear Boise,
Idaho, aggregating 7 SO million: feet
There Is a considerable tract of tim
ber now being advertised for sale on
Mill creek, on the Mlnam National
Forest. Contracts for the sale of
large quantities of timber cover as
long a period as ten to twenty years
for Its removal.
