could Imagine. A national campaign
for "Better Babies' Is now well un
der way. Fully one hundred xsities
all over the United ' States, both
large and small, are planning baby
shows of the new aort for thla year
that Is, baby shows at which the
standard of supremacy 4s not to 'be
beauty, as In the - old-time baby
shows, but health and physical ex
cellence. '. '
The' April Companion, of ourse,
contains many other interesting nnd
slghly useful articles. As for ex
ample, "A healthy mind In a bealtiiy
body", by Ralph Waldo Trine; an
article by John Phillips Street, Pure
Food Commissioner of Connecticut,
who shows housewives the Import
ance of reading labels on trie goods

Yard", in which Frank A. Waugh, an
expert, takes up the subject of. rais
ing poultry on a small scale; "The
Social Problems of a Girl", In which
Christine Terhune Herrlck presents
some Intensely practical ' and enter
taining advice; and a baseball article
which will furnish mothers a number
of definite ideas about toaseball which
the
method holds
palm. . -
.In talking recently with some men
on this subject the question of the
motive of this double clipper, tree
barberlng came up. No one
Imagine what it could be. ' In walking
down the street we noticed the trees
in pausing. One young man connect
wllh a firm which required him to
travel extensively, declared that he
had "never seer, any place quite so
bad. All of the symmetry of form
Is gone, the trees' beauty Is all but
destroyed " was his opinion and the
rest concurred with hlra heartily.
Recently an order was printed in
hhis city to the effect that warning
was thereby given to all propertj
owners, that trees snould oe cut oats
because they might interfere, with the
wires of the light and telephone com
panies. The reader's attention Is cal
led to the word "might.." Surely
these companies must tzrs some ex
traordinary hold on the city' to force
It to butcher Its trees in this way. The
strange part about It, however, is
that many of the trees are cut back
where there are no wires at all. In
such a case the owner must have been
led by a desire to be in style and In
many cases this has led to such a
barberlng of the trees as to give them
simply a ridiculous appearance.
La Grande has possibilities of great
natural beauty. Its trees might rival
those of some of the beautiful New
England towns, hut If the present
policy Is persisted In the whole town
will soon have a grotesque appear
ance altogether unworthy of its cltl
tenship. Let the property owners
think twice before permanently ruin
ing the appearance of a noble tree.

Easter Eggs.
First save all eggshells until you
have' a dozen, taking care when break
ing at the small end, leaving an open
ing about the size of a nickel. Ar
range them standing on end In a pan
of flour or meal, leaving open end
up. rut on tne lire one. pint miw in
double boiler, leaving out one-half
cup; scald, and then add two level
tablespoonfuh corn starch, one table-
spoonful sugar and a pinch of salt dis
solved in Jhe one-half cup cold milk;
cook ten minutes, then add the beatea
whites of two eggs; cook one minute.
remove from the fire, flavor with lem
on and pour into four shells. Repeat
the process with another pint of milk,
adding the. beaten yolks of two eggs.
and flavor with vanilla. Repeat again
adding one square of chocolate, When
all shells are filled, set away to hard
en. , Make a dish or lemon Jelly; re
move shells from eggs and pace them
on a mound of Jelly broken In small
pieces. Serve with a custard sauce.

Make some lobster forcemeat as
follows: Fry an onion, chopped very
fine In an ounce of good butter, until
lightly brown, adding one , table-
spoonful of flour to make a roux.
Moisten with half a pint of white
stock, stirring well and constantly
until the sauce hardens. Season with
half a tablespoonful of salt, a scant
teaspoonful of pepper and the same
of cayenne, one tablespoonul of Eng
lish sauce, halt a teaspoonful df mus
tard, a crushed grain of garlic and
one teaspoonful of chopped parsley.
Stir wejl, adding two pounds of cook
ed lobster, cut up Very fine, with 12
mushrrooms, also chopped. Cook for
thirty minutes in a saucepan, then out
It back off the hot fire; add four egg
yolks, stir again for a moment, coo.
Shape like chops. Dip In brend
crumbs; fry In deep, hot fat. -When

Cover the bottom of a buttered bak
ing dish to the depth or one-halT an
with coarse stale, entire wheat breud
crubs; then add two layers .of drieii
prunes which have been soaked in
warm water until soft enough to re
move the pits. Dust with pulvcr xul
cinnamon and n'utmeg, cover with an
other layer of crubs; then dot with
butter and add one cupful of hot niKk.
Bake In a moderate oven for one-half
hour, or until the top Is brown and
crusty and the milk absorbed. Serve
with hard sauce.
Rice Padding.
Boll three cups of rice In a quart
of milk; add a pint of milk when the
rice Is cooked done, w'th two cups
of sugar, half a cup of butter, half a
pound o seeded raisins, half a pound
of sliced citron and a quarter ot a
pound of blanched almonds. Put the
yolks of ten and the whites ot four
eggs and mix in; squeeze In. the
Juice o three lemons; put In a pud
ding dish and bake two hours. Make
a meringue of the six whites of eggs
and a teacupful of sugar; flavor with
nutmeg; eat without sauce.

Take one large cup dates, two thirds
cup butter, one cup sugar, pinch jult

dates. Cream the butter and sugar
