One ot the most progressive school
districts In the county Is Tum-aLum
district No. 4. three miles north ot
Freewater, according to Superintend
ent I. E. Young. ! Principal W.- W.
Green has taken the matter of Indus
trial work up with them and the pat
rons have gone In for It in the poultry
line strong. A meeting of the patrona
of the school was held week before
last, and each family pledged them
selves to furnish a setting ot eggs to
one pupil. If they have children-attending
school, but if they have none
then to some other child " attending
school. ' They are making their prin
cipal efforts along three liner of
thoroughbreds, namely the White Or
pington, White Wyandotte and White
Leghorn. A poultry show will be
given some time this fall, presum
ably in November or December when
the birds will be given to a competent
judge and the winners will be sent to
the Pendleton poultry show for com
petition here. ' . ' .- !
This district is also going In strong
on the home credit system, which is
so strongly recommended by State
Superintendent Alderman. They have
their card out and the parents ' are
looking after giving every pupil the
credits for work at home.

A fire alarm was turned In about
2:15 this afternoon from the west end
of town which was followed immedi
ately with an alarm from the central
station and another from, the south
side of the track. Everything seemed
to be so confused that no one knew
which way nor : where to; go.' .The
hook and ladder, truck -' was hauled
from Cottonwood up to Vincent street-
then south tl Bluff thence down Bluff
to Aura, then across the town north
again to' Court street and the place of
alarm' finally located' In the kitchen
of John - Estes, where a flue had
burned out which made the stove
burn much better. The only damage
recorded to date Is that the wind of
some of the fir laddies was somewhat
the worse for wear.

pany, known as -the Baker Log Rate
case has received information from
Chairman Clyde B. Altchison ot the
state railroad commission that . the

in the case, which will be held In tbla,
city on April 7, beginning at .10 a. m.
The commission recently . ruled in
the case, the details being well known,
and the little difference has reverted
to ifakor log shippers in view of the
fart . 'that the company does not feel
bound to handle other than its own
logs or to switch its own cars on prf
vate sidlncs.
