An to' portant link In the . chain of Pacific Northwest festival will be added this summer In Spokane, when residents of the surrounding country will unite In giving a carnival on a scale equal to that of the Portland Rose Festival Seattle Potlatch and Pendleton Roundup. ' One of the principal features an nounced by a committee of 50 bus! ness men will be an athletic tourna ment, patterned after the Olympic games, In which athletes in all part of the North America will be eligible to compete for valuable prize. ' The carnival will hark, back to western pioneer days, too, with a tournament of volunteer fire departments, 'of which there are scores In the towns of the Spokane country. ' Though no name has been selected yet, the event will be known as play time n the Inland Empire of the Pa cific Northwest. In order that the tensttf thousands of farmers may par tlc-ipate, the week beginning June 16 has ' been selected, following the spring planting and preceding har vest. ; ' . . Business men of Spokane already have contributed $10,000 to a fund for this year's carnival, and twice that sum will be raised during the next 60 days. Charles Hebberd, president of the chamber of com merce, states that the carnival will be one of a series of Pacific North western events that serve to effect a closer co-operation between commun ities, adding: "We want to make this section the summer playground of America, Just as the south Is the winter play ground. With our carnivals we can accomplish at least two things; first we can make the visits of persons from the east more enjoyable; and second, we can unite the people of our own country in a close bond of unity."
