E., added another chapter to J! profuse social history last evening ween the annual ball and banquet waa served 4a a place made extremely beautiful. In brilliancy of dress and gayness of guests, the event was unsurpassed. Costa and expense accounts figure not when Elks igive their annuals. The decorations alone cost over $200 and other expenses were1 in proportion. . Simple lines were keynotes of the decorations which it is safe to say have never been equalled, primarily because of the newness ot lines cre ated. Back of all tbe ulterior decor ations, and covering every inch of wall space and windows as well, was the distinctive blue that marks Elk- dom. The unjform blue ' waa offset by delicate white, M. covering the ceilings, uniformly broken 'with luiit clusters and a central flower basket, well down from the celling. The sharpness of the rectangular walls and ceiling was relieved by a slight drop at the wall end of the sheeting fastened snug to the Jong axis of the center of the celling, and hls In turn modulated with a slight lift mid way to tbe ' wall. The central decoration was a huge basket of Egyptian type covered and running over with fine chrysanthemums and wistaria blossoms. . The pillars were extremely plain adorned with simnle. square but at tractive entablature, only slightly larger than the columns' top plate. Without frieze or cornice, the arches sat squarely on the miniature entab lature but with graceful curves they swung to the adjoining pillars of sim ilar make. The striking effect ot this was the Roman forum notion. Though snugly set against the wall, this arch- column affair, winding entiroiy around the room, was sharply con trasted from the wall via the color route. Thev were pure white against the blue background but color was lent by closely trailing wistaria vines with their pale-blue pendulous blos soms artistically marking the course of climbing, twisting vines of green. Midway un each collonude was a clus ter of three frosted globe lights. The music dais was encased In blue and sllehtl.v set off with latticed fences. The anteroom was likewise touched off with lattice and wistaria blooms and vinos. The general scheme was worked . -. . ......... I .
