MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1913. LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER PAGE TWO HIGHER PRICE IS EXPEGTED 0OLLAR WHEAT. IS 0T FAB OFF, SAT HtlTK S. General It view of the Market Siluu. llon at Large. The country at large seems to lie atlsfled that the situation In wheat baa the kind of bottom that won t leak and that the prlre is high and .' going higher aa the result of the laws of supply anil demand. This is meet Ing the briskest kind of buying by the merchants In the Interior, espe clallyclally the millers. Tbey are buy ing at figures that are not given at tidewater and the outlook that all markets of the world will realize dol lar wheat In a very short time. Lon don and South American markets are strong and have been In spite of the oncoming crop In the great wheal growing belts of the 8011th American republics. The fact of the matter Ih that there Is pot much wheat In the bands of the producers, and the price la bound to be hlKh until the mining season. If the crop should be dam aged It would resuls'ln prices much beyond the fore anting of the hen! experts In the wheat business. All millers continue to lay In goodly sup plies of wheat, and the shippers to foreign countries are forced to keep the price up In order to realize any thing at all. Eastern .Markets Compete With West. The reason why the Portland mar- kot In the past week was lower than all of the others In the I'nltcd StaieH Is given out to be that the Chicago product Is on the Portland market at the same price as the home product. Now the cost of meats In the Chi cago market plus the cost of shipping to the cotmt ought to make meat much more expensive, but the price Is ex actly the same for the, home product as It Is for the eastern meats.- This bas hurt the western trade and unless there Is some kind of agreement be tween the growers of live stock In the west w'th the packers and the buyers In Portland the outlook la not the best. Just how the eastern men can compete with the western markets Is to bo ex plained. The Chicago nnd the Kansas City markets have hern Just a tilde lower than the Portland mnrfcet but tho difference Is not enruich to enable them after paying the freight to com pete with the home grown product. Vegetables Scarce. Tho vegetnble market In La Grande Is Just now beginning to lee I tlie ef fects of the frost In the California country. Celery is coming vqrjr slowly and the quality Is so poor that It Is hardly saleable. The shipment from Portland by some of the merchants have been discontinued. Walla Walla continues to offer pretty fair stock and all attention Is directed to that source of supply. Lemons $SJ0 Ier Box. It looks as if the lemon trade I going to be the stlffcst In many a year Never before has the crop been ruined to the same extent or the price gone to such prohibitive figures. Oranges are beginning to thin out and we will soon be at the end of the supply and then this dainty fruit will belong to the luxuries. Floor, Feed and Grain. Wild Hay (retail) $12.00.
