The delegation selected by tha sen
ale and bouse of representatives, to
gether withi members of the atata
board and other interested persons,
spent tha day in Pendleton Saturday
looking over tha Eastern Oregon Hos
pltal. In the evening they were en
tertained at the Wenaha club, where
a banquet was given In their honor.
Mr. W. L. Thompson, president of the
American' National bank, was toast-
master and a number of splendid ad
dresses were made. Nearly all of the
members of the delegation were full
of praise for tha fine buildings of tha
Eastern Oregon Hospital and ot the
management thereof and expressed a
willingness to stand for good sized
appropriations for the maintalnence
thereof. .
Among those who made speeches
were T. U Perkins, Mr. Abbott, the
chairman of the ways and means com
mlttee, and Dr. 'Woods.
Senator Bean stated that, in his
opinion, the legislature should appro
priate $10,000 or more for building
barns and other equipment, but th?
he was not satisfied It should appro
priate $100,000 for a new wing at
this time that on account of the large
demands made upon the legislature
for appropriations for other Institu
tions a system of rigid economy
would have to be practiced.
State Treasurer Thomas Kay stat
ed that he was very proud of the
management of the Eastern Oregon
Hospital and that he wanted to see
It becoms one of the very best Insti
tutions of this character in the Un
ited States.
' Mr. Hagood of Multnomah, was the
oily democrat of the entire delega
tion. He stated that he thought a
largo appropriation should be made;
that a new wing should be built; a
large barn and a home for the super
'ntendent and other necessary build
ings should be looked out for by ap
propriate appropriations.
Representative Westerland stated
that he would certainly advocate a
sufficient appropriation for the build
ing of a new wing, good barns, a
home for the superintendent, and
other needed improvements.
Representative Massie of Washing
ton county and Senator Smith of Jo
sephine county voiced the sentiments
of Representative Westerland. Por
ter of Lynn and Hughes of Marion
ware outspoken in their advocacy
for a large appropriation.
Dr. R. E. U Stelner, superintend
ent of the hospital at Salem, spoke
briefly but highly complimented the
people of Pendleton on being so for
tunate as to have Dr. McNary as sup
erintendent of the Eastern Oregon;
Hospital; that Dr. McNary had been
personally known to him for a num
ber of years and that he Is one of tha
best men in the state, as well as one
of the best equipped men that could
possibly have been found for the sup
erlntendency. H)s also complimented
the members of the last legislature
for the splendid stand they took In
the establishment of the Institution.
He particularly mentioned J. Bower
man, C. A. Barrett S. D. Peterson and
McKinnejr of Baker. Dr. Stelner
stated that while he would have to
measurably look after his own Insti
tution It was very apparent a large
appropriation was needed for the
further Improvement of the Eastern
Oregon hospital. i
' Dr. McNary. superintendent, brief
ly outlined the needs of the hospital
and stated that It would be his pur
pose to work assiduously for the best
Interest of the Institution and for
Umatilla county In general; that he
accepted the superlntendency with a
great deal of hesitation,' but that It
was now, his ambition to see the In
stitution become the greatest in
America.
