It was a big success financially, socially and decoratlvely. Anyone familiar with the usual In struments of the trainmen could tell at a glance that It was the train men's affair. Festoons hung with - lanterns, of all the colors known to the service, draped gracefully from a central point in the hall to the four corners of theroom. Crossing these lantern festoons were festoons made of railroad flags, white, green, red, and yellow. On the walls were flr .loughs with varicolored incandescent lights glimmering through the twigs. The other light fixtures were not ased In the fore part of the dance and the effect was decidedly pretty. The music was furnished by the Elks rchestra and was very good. Many of the gowns worn by the ladies were creations of beauty and would have graced some millionaire's turnout. It was a baoner event in the year's do ings of the trainmen and will be long remembered as one of the most suc cessful affairs of the season. There were approximately. 125 couples on the floor. The cost of the arrange ments came to that sum and the com. mittee broke even. The following committee deserve credit tor the successful affair: Hanford, Alston, ' Happersett, Ormond and Le Fevre. The lanterns were lent through the courtesy of the O.-W. R. & N. Co. j A delightful Ave hundred party was given last Wednesday evening by Miss Agnes Leslie at the home of Mrs. Kate Hanley, one and a half miles north of the city. The guests - went out from La Grande in automobiles and enjpyed every minute of the trip. Mrs. Elizabeth Donnelly won the first hon ors at cards and Miss Marjorlo Mc Call the consolation. A two course luncheon was served the guests dur ing the evening. Those who partici pated In the delightful affair were: lira. Elizabeth Donnelly; Misses Ethel. May me and Mildred . Relth, Donna Geddes, Irma Aiken, Ethel Hanley, Marjorle McCall and Ethel Gulling; Messrs. Charles William son, lien Bassett, Elmer Stoddard, Richard Claycomb, Leo French, H. R Blackwell, Walter Francis, and Nor man Frees. Last evening, the Baptist church tendered a reception to Rlev. and Mrs. R. E. Close In the lecture room of the church. The guests Included llie pastors of the sister churches of the city. After refreshments were served, the chairman, Mrs. C. E. Hap persett, gave a few Introductory re marks and then introduced Rev. J. W. Oliver who gave the address of welcome on behalf of the church. The Ministerial association was ropresonted by Rev. A. G. Lane of the Presbyterian church. Rev. Glbbs of the Episcopal church gave an . ad dress on "Opportunities for Religious Work In La Grande." Secretary John II. Rudd spoke on the ''Relation or the Y. M. C. A. to the Church.' E. church gave an address on the "Relation of the Church and Pastor." Rev. A. J. E. served a .din ner to the members of the latter or- uanizatlon and a few Invited friends in the K. of P. hall. It was a big family dinner and all of the viands were the product of good home cook- Inn. It was good for in the cleaning up there was not much to evidence the nresence of -fine salads, army baked1 beans, southern mince pies and spark ling home made Jells that had graced the tables in the beginning. There was mirth and cheer and bantering laughter to make the evening enjoya ble, and everyone went away happy. Mrs. Lee Humphrey entertained the Parkdnle club Wednesday. Mrs. M. S. Carroll gave an Irish reading which was well accorded at the Dish dialect. After the partaking of a vnltive three course lunch as our grandmothers all know how to pre pare, all reluctantly retired. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Luffers at Island City next Wednesday. The club extends to Sister Mrs. Gillman their heartfelt sympathy In the loss of her husband. The Neighborhood club met last Tuesday and despite a sovere storm, drew out good attendance. The Em ri dnv nrogram was heard in con nection with the musical program prepared by the Scholarship wan fund day committee. It was a very enjoyable afternoon, replete with ex cellent numbers and pleasant social features. The Young Ladles' Sodality have Issued Invitations announcing their coming dance in Elks hall on Wed nesday, the I?th. Previous affairs by these ladles have been very suc cessful one and in view of the fact that it will be the last one before the Lenten season It Is thought this one will eclipse all previous efforts Dancing will commence about 8:30 o'clock. Mrs. n. D. Corter entertained at a itllinar and a luncheon a party of young people at her home on Carter street In honor of Miss Mane vonne. or La Grande, who Is visiting with her daughter. Miss Roberta Carter. Both events were very enjoyable. Baker Democrat. Lady members of the Sans Soucl club met this week with Mrs. Robert Pattison at her home in West La Grande. Thenext Joint session of the club will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dunn. Mrs. Oscar JackBon was hostess to the Bllllkln club Thursday, entertain ing lnformaly the half-dozen members of tha organization, at her home on First street Mrs. J. J. Carr entertained the Five Hundred club on Thursday afternoon. Honors- at cards were won by Mre. M. B. Donohue. The Moose hold their monthly so cial gathering next Monday evening. Dancing and cards will be the man ner of amusement for the guests. Each Moose is inviting one gentleman and Ills lady friend. Mrs. H. C. Grady and Miss L.
